Unlabelled: Accurate localization of white matter pathways using diffusion MRI is critical to investigating brain connectivity, but the accuracy of current methods is not thoroughly understood. A fruitful approach to validating accuracy is to consider microscopy data that have been co-registered with MRI of post mortem samples. In this setting, structure tensor analysis is a standard approach to computing local orientations for validation.

Background: School-based health centers (SBHCs) provide vital behavioral, sexual, and reproductive healthcare services to school-aged youth across the United States. Adolescents who are sexual and gender diverse (SGD) are far more likely to suffer from adverse health outcomes than their cisgender and heterosexual peers. Emerging structural competency frameworks call for cultivating capacities in SBHCs to modify organizational service delivery environments, including provider and staff knowledge and behaviors, to influence SGD adolescent well-being.

Article Synopsis
  • LGBQ middle schoolers face significant behavioral health challenges, with a quarter of surveyed students identifying as LGBQ reporting poorer mental health and higher suicidal behaviors compared to their heterosexual peers.
  • This study used data from the 2021 New Mexico Middle School Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey, involving around 12,400 participants, to assess these disparities.
  • The findings suggest that struggles related to mental health and substance use begin earlier than previously thought for LGBQ youth, highlighting ongoing sociocultural challenges they face.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), male engagement, social norms, and social networks mitigate family planning behavior. We discuss the adaptation of the Social Norms Exploration Tool (SNET), which identifies relevant social norms and community members upholding these norms, to inform the development of family planning interventions in the DRC. The SNET provides activity tools and templates to guide users through the following steps: (1) plan and prepare, (2) identify reference groups, (3) explore social norms, (4) analyze results, and (5) apply findings.

In spite of the great progress that has been made towards automating brain extraction in human magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), challenges remain in the automation of this task for mouse models of brain disorders. Researchers often resort to editing brain segmentation results manually when automated methods fail to produce accurate delineations. However, manual corrections can be labor-intensive and introduce interrater variability.

Article Synopsis
  • Male sterilization (vasectomy) is highly effective, with only 2% of women globally relying on it as a contraceptive method in 2019, highlighting a gap in its utilization despite clear benefits.
  • The study involved interviews with 15 vasectomy providers to understand their decision-making processes regarding patient candidacy, focusing on their training, experiences, and the complexities they encounter.
  • Findings revealed that providers must balance patient autonomy with non-maleficence (avoiding harm) in their evaluations, often prioritizing safety even when best practices suggest prioritizing patient choice, particularly in complex cases.

There has been a concerted effort by the neuroimaging community to establish standards for computational methods for data analysis that promote reproducibility and portability. In particular, the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) specifies a standard for storing imaging data, and the related BIDS App methodology provides a standard for implementing containerized processing environments that include all necessary dependencies to process BIDS datasets using image processing workflows. We present the BrainSuite BIDS App, which encapsulates the core MRI processing functionality of BrainSuite within the BIDS App framework.

School nurses are critical components of school-based interdisciplinary teams supporting student behavioral health. The purpose of the present study is to understand the extent to which school nurses in New Mexico across grade levels manage emergencies related to behavioral health, violence, and trauma. The study also seeks to identify which topics the school nurses received continuing education (CE) for, and which topics they consider to be important to their practice.

Article Synopsis
  • The experiences of school nurses in non-urban areas are less documented compared to their urban counterparts.
  • Non-urban school nurses in New Mexico tend to handle clinical services across multiple campuses and serve both elementary and secondary schools more frequently than urban nurses.
  • However, they are generally less likely to have advanced educational qualifications and recent training on topics like diabetes, reproductive health, and LGBTQ+ student health, highlighting disparities in health equity access for students.

Policy and communication responses to COVID-19 can benefit from better understanding of people's baseline and resulting beliefs, behaviours and norms. From July 2020 to March 2021, we fielded a global survey on these topics in 67 countries yielding over 2 million responses. This paper provides an overview of the motivation behind the survey design, details the sampling and weighting designed to make the results representative of populations of interest and presents some insights learned from the survey.

We present a new high-quality, single-subject atlas with sub-millimeter voxel resolution, high SNR, and excellent gray-white tissue contrast to resolve fine anatomical details. The atlas is labeled into two parcellation schemes: 1) the anatomical BCI-DNI atlas, which is manually labeled based on known morphological and anatomical features, and 2) the hybrid USCBrain atlas, which incorporates functional information to guide the sub-parcellation of cerebral cortex. In both cases, we provide consistent volumetric and cortical surface-based parcellation and labeling.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the rise of six LGBTQ-supportive school practices across US states from 2010 to 2018.
  • Data was analyzed from the CDC's School Health Profiles, using linear regression to track trends in school practices across all 50 states.
  • Results showed that while the percentage of schools using all six practices increased from 5.7% in 2010 to 15.3% in 2018, the overall implementation remains low, indicating a need for further improvements and understanding of the challenges involved.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of COVID-19 vaccine intention among Bangladeshi adults.

Methods: Secondary data from the COVID-19 Beliefs, Behaviors & Norms Survey conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Facebook were analyzed. Data were collected from 2,669 adult Facebook users in Bangladesh and was collected between February 15 and February 28, 2021.

Introduction: Schools in the United States are hierarchical institutions that actively (re)produce the power relations of the wider social world, including those associated with heteronormativity. Structural stigma, informed by heteronormativity and perpetuated through schools, contributes to the production of academic and health disparities among youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or of other gender and sexual identities (LGBTQ+). We draw upon 5 years of qualitative data from a cluster randomized controlled trial conducted in New Mexico that used implementation science frameworks to promote the uptake and sustainment of evidence-informed practices (EIPs) to examine how power operates to hinder or promote the ability of school staff to change school environments, disrupt structural stigma, and increase safety and support for LGBTQ+ youth.

Handwashing is essential for respiratory virus prevention, but uptake of handwashing in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic remains under-explored. This study examines trends in and determinants of handwashing practices for COVID-19 prevention in 10 countries in West, East, and Southern Africa. Data are derived from an online global Facebook survey assessing COVID-19 knowledge, attitudes, and practices, fielded in July (Round 1) and November 2020 (Round 2).

Deep brain nuclei are integral components of large-scale circuits mediating important cognitive and sensorimotor functions. However, because they fall outside the domain of conventional non-invasive neuromodulatory techniques, their study has been primarily based on neuropsychological models, limiting the ability to fully characterize their role and to develop interventions in cases where they are damaged. To address this gap, we used the emerging technology of non-invasive low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) to directly modulate left lateralized basal ganglia structures in healthy volunteers.
