West Nile virus (WNV) circulation in the territory of Saratov region and its role in the infectious pathology were investigated. For this purpose, in studies conducted in 2013-2015, suspensions of bloodsucking arthropods, organs of birds and small mammals were analyzed for the presence of WNV markers (antigens and/or RNA). The seroprevalence level in live-stock animals and population of the region was evaluated; clinical samples from patients with symptoms compatible with West Nile fever (WNF) were analyzed.

The paper gives the results of a study dealing with the detection of the antigens of arboviruses of West Nile, Sindbis, Batai, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, a serocomplex of Californian encephalitis in the field material gathered in the Saratov Region in 2000-2006. The bloodsucking arthropods inhabiting the region were shown to be actively involved in the circulation of arboviruses in natural biotopes. The conclusion that it is expedient to organize an annual monitoring of arbovirus-induced infections in the areas where positive findings have been notified is justified.

Studying the sensitivity and specificity of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the indication of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus antigens and those of reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the detection of CCHF virus RNA, and those of a intercerebral infection method in newborn albino mice systems for the determination of viral infectious activity established that the sensitivity of ELISA was 1-2 orders of magnitude less than that of RP-PCR. Seasonal dynamics and demographic structure was studied in 15 dominant ground beetle species in the mountain taiga and mountain forest-steppe belts of the Eastern Sayan (Okinskoe Plateau). Life cycles of the dominant ground beetle species were classified by developmental time, seasonal dynamics, and intrapopulation groups with different reproduction timing. The strategies of carabid life cycles adapted to severe mountain conditions of the Eastern Sayan were revealed.

We studied the seasonal dynamics and demographic structure of abundant ground beetle species from the mountain taiga belt in the Eastern Sayan. Data on the dynamics of the sexual and age structure of the populations as well as on the reproductive capacity of females in the biotopes on the slopes with different exposure and height were obtained. Life cycles with one- and two-year development were revealed for the ground beetles typical for the mountain taiga belt.

Two types of NADH oxidation, rotenone-sensitive and rotenone-insensitive, in suspension of beef heart mitochondria were investigated by the spectrophotometric method. The oxidation of the added NADH by mitochondria in hypotonic media occurs only through the NADH dehydrogenase of the respiratory chain, since it was totally blocked by rotenone or amytal (and also by antimycin A or azide), but the ferricyanide-activated NADH oxidation was insensitive to these inhibitors. The insensitivity of the NADH dehydrogenase to rotenone appears to be due to a shunt of the electron transfer to ferricyanide without involving of ubiquinone.

Information on V. cholerae eltor isolated in the focus of cholera in Kazan in 2001 at different periods of the outbreak is presented. The identity of strains isolated from patients, vibriocarriers and environmental objects, including their antibioticograms (sensitivity to cyprofloxacin and resistance to trimethoprim--sulfamethoxazole, streptomycin, furazolidone and nalidixic acid, which may be regarded as markers), is shown.

The analysis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA sequences in CEM and Jurkat lymphoid cells infected with the virus has been performed at the subcellular level. Using a biotinylated DNA probe specific for HIV-1, virus RNA sequences were detected on Lowicryl thin sections after immunogold cytochemistry. The labelling observed on the cytoplasm was localized near the plasma membrane connected with extracellular cluster of virions.
