A 55-year-old right-handed male presented acutely with inability to flex at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint of the right small finger after feeling a pop while moving heavy furniture. Avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon at its insertion, or "jersey finger," was suspected. During operative exploration, the insertion on the distal phalanx was intact, and the rupture was noted proximally at the level of the lumbrical origin.

Congenital cleft earlobe is a rare clinical entity that results from failure of fusion during embryologic development. In contrast to acquired earlobe clefts, congenital defects are usually associated with tissue loss, thereby complicating surgical repair. The authors present the case of a 22-year-old female with a triple-lobe type of congenital cleft earlobe and discuss their technique for repair.

The treatment of metastatic melanoma continues to be quite challenging, although in recent years, there has been significant progress. Current National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines list immunotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery and clinical trials as potential options for patients with metastatic disease but do not clearly recommend which is superior.

The authors evaluated oncologic safety and cost benefit of single-stage neoplasm extirpation with immediate reconstruction.
Methods: The authors reviewed all patients treated with biopsy-proven melanoma followed by immediate reconstruction during a 3-year period (January of 2011 to December of 2013).
WE LIVE in a world in which war and conflict abound, natural disasters strike frequently and, because of our global connectivity, infectious disease is just an incubation period away.

It is an underdiagnosed entity that is often missed during the initial trauma workup as symptoms can be subtle. There are few reports of lesions occurring below the knee.

Methods: From August 28 to October 18, 2008, 119 Red Cross field service locations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas addressed the healthcare needs of people affected by the hurricanes. From these locations, individual client visit data were retrospectively collated per site onto new 24-hour Aggregate Morbidity Report Forms.

Breast augmentation is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States. Postoperative pain management following breast surgery has traditionally involved intravenous and oral narcotics. However, pain control is not always adequately achieved through these means and may cause unwanted side effects, including headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, altered mental status, sleep disturbance, and respiratory depression.

Design And Sample: This was a quasi-experimental one group pre and post design. Participants (N = 54) completed pre- and postintervention surveys to evaluate intervention impact on self-perceived confidence and need for further training in the 25 competencies.
Disaster mental health is defined as "community and individual mental and behavioral health preparedness and response as well as other psychosocial and cultural factors" (Hoffman et al., 2005, p. S141).

The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the bacterial organisms responsible for such overgrowth and contamination, and to examine their susceptibility to (i) various chemical selective decontamination steps and (ii) antibiotics in liquid culture media, in an attempt to develop a method to help alleviate contamination problems associated with the conventional isolation of M. tuberculosis from routine patient sputum specimens.

Registered Nurses also have more opportunities available for participation in emergency and disaster preparedness curricula. Discipline- and specialty-specific training and education for public health nurses (PHNs) incorporating their population-based practice, however, remains a largely unexplored area that is not accessible except for sporadic local venues.

Design And Methods: Using a 3-round Delphi approach, public health nurses (PHNs) and directors of nursing from local health departments, state nursing leaders, and national nursing preparedness experts reviewed and commented on 49 draft competencies derived from existing documents.
Results: The final 25 competencies were categorized into Preparedness (n=9), Response (n=8), and Recovery (n=7).

The Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Survey (BPRS) was a survey of Ohio local health departments' capacity to respond to bioterrorism. Soon after completion of the BPRS, the events of September 11 occurred, followed by the human cases of anthrax. The Ohio Response to Bioterrorism 2001 Survey (ORB) identified bioterrorism preparedness issues related to the suspected anthrax incidents.
