Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated a prototype dynamic laryngoplasty system (DLPS) on 7 healthy Standardbred horses to assess its feasibility for treating laryngeal issues.
  • A standing surgical procedure induced complete laryngeal hemiplegia, and the DLPS showed effective delivery with no complications during the trial.
  • Results indicated that while the DLPS could improve airway function 7 days post-surgery, long-term effects (1 month) were limited due to potential fibrosis around the implant.

Dynamic nasopharyngeal collapse (NPC) is an obstructive upper airway disease that affects mainly the inspiratory phase of respiration in horses undergoing strenuous exercise. It occurs when the neuromuscular activity of the nasopharynx is overwhelmed by the intense negative pressures generated during exercise. This leads to collapse of at least one of the four components of the nasopharynx which is comprised of the two lateral walls, the dorsal roof and the ventral soft palate.

Article Synopsis
  • Alpha receptor agonists like xylazine are commonly used for sedation and pain relief in sheep, but they can cause serious side effects, particularly when injected into the spinal area (SAI).
  • A case involving a Merino wether showed that after SAI of xylazine, the animal quickly became oxygen dependent and had breathing difficulties, despite treatments not alleviating the condition initially.
  • The situation improved significantly after the administration of atipamezole, highlighting the potential risks and the need for caution when using alpha receptor agonists in sheep anesthetic practices.
