In the present study, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized from the bulbs of Allium sativum, characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM, HR-TEM, EDAX analysis and investigated its action on the inhibition of starch digestion. The results proved that the biosynthesized nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed, spherical shaped with the size ranging from 10 to 30 nm. The phytochemical and FT-IR analysis showed the presence of phenols, terpenoids, and amino acids in the synthesized AgNPs.

The purpose of the study is to determine the anti-proliferative and mitochondrial status of benzo(a)pyrene-induced lung cancer in Swiss albino mice, as well as the modulatory effect of vanillic acid on it. B(a)P had altered levels of lysosomal enzymes, xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, cell proliferation, inflammation, and mitochondrial abnormalities, whereas treatment with VA treatment significantly reversed the aforementioned activities. According to the findings, VA greatly reduces lung carcinogenesis by restoring antioxidants and xenobiotic-enzyme levels, consequently proving to be an anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory drug against lung cancer in mice.

In order to explore temporal changes of predictability of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a novel set of global biennial climate reforecasts for the historical period 1901-2010 has been generated using a modern initialized coupled forecasting system. We find distinct periods of enhanced long-range skill at the beginning and at the end of the twentieth century, and an extended multi-decadal epoch of reduced skill during the 1930s-1950s. Once the forecast skill extends beyond the first spring barrier, the predictability limit is much enhanced and our results provide support for the feasibility of skillful ENSO forecasts up to 18 months.

Pulmonary atresia (PA) with ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly in which the pulmonary blood flow is supplied by major aorta pulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs). The complete repair includes unifocalization of MAPCAs, closure of VSD, and placement of a right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduit. We report a case of VSD with PA, where the computed tomography and echocardiography images described a large single collateral artery arising from descending thoracic aorta dividing into left and right branches and supplying the entire pulmonary circulation.

Positioning of central venous catheter (CVC) tip in the intrathoracic portion of superior vena cava (SVC) is essential during the surgical repair of superior sinus venous atrial septal defects (SVASD). Although tracheal carina is described as a radiological landmark for positioning the tip of CVCs, it may not be successful at all times. We describe a case of SVC type SVASD, where the SVC-right pulmonary artery crossing point imaged on transesophageal echocardiography was used as an echocardiographic landmark for optimal positioning of the CVC tip.

The filarial protein Abundant Larval Transcript-2 (ALT-2) of the filarial parasite Brugia malayi has been shown to produce 74% worm clearance when administered with an adjuvant. In the present study, we show that it not only induces humoral and cell-mediated immunity, but also protection up to 71% in Mastomys coucha, a permissive animal model for filariasis, even without adjuvant. This unique feature of ALT-2 protein is highly restricted to its 21 amino acid N-terminal signal sequence, the absence of which resulted in poor immune response as well as immunoprotection (49%).

The aim of the study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Pistacia integerrima, Cedrus deodara and Gymnema sylvestre against seven different microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas, Bacillus subtillis and Staphylococcus aureus by using disc diffusion method. Preliminary studies with ethanol extract and water extract of plants indicated that the growth of test organism was markedly inhibited by ethanol extract of Pistacia integerrima and Gymnema sylvestre. But in case of Cedrus deodara, water extract was more effective.
