Background: American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center verification has demonstrated improved outcomes at individual centers, but its impact on statewide Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Collaboratives is unknown. A statewide TQIP Collaborative, founded in 2011, noted underperformance in six of eight patient cohorts identified in the TQIP Collaborative report. We hypothesized that requiring ACS verification for level I and II trauma centers would result in improved outcomes for the state collaborative.

The present work aimed to examine the primary mechanisms of liver damage, namely the impact of gut-derived endotoxins along the gut-liver axis and adipose-derived free fatty acids along the adipose-liver axis. These processes are known to play a significant role in the development of hepatic inflammation and steatosis. Although possible overlapping in the pathogenesis was expected, these processes have unique pathophysiological consequences.

We present an editorial on an article that highlights the benefits of dexmedetomidine (Dex) in colon cancer surgeries, which have been thoroughly investigated in the referenced publication involving 117 subjects. Of these patients, 59 (group A) received Dex before anesthesia induction, while 58 (group B) received normal saline. Group A patients demonstrated several advantages over Group B, including lower propofol and remifentanil requirements, improved cerebral oxygenation as measured by regional cerebral oxygen saturation, better hemodynamic stability, and reduced incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial blight in pomegranate, caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. punicae (Xcp), is a major issue leading to significant economic losses, with current management primarily relying on antibiotics and copper-based treatments.
  • The excessive use of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance, prompting research into eco-friendly alternatives like native endophytes, which are beneficial bacteria isolated from pomegranate plants that can inhibit Xcp growth through the production of antimicrobial volatiles.
  • Field trials showed that using these endophytes reduced the disease index by 47-68%, outperforming traditional chemical treatments, making them promising candidates for sustainable bacterial blight management in pomegranate cultivation.

The quest for new approaches for generating novel bioactive designer proteins/peptides has continued with their success in various biomedical applications. Previously, we designed a 14-mer α-helical peptide with antimicrobial and antimycobacterial activities by employing a tandem repeat of the 7-mer, "KVLGRLV" human chemerin segment. Herein, we devised a new method of "sliding framework" with this segment to create amino acid scaffolds of varying sizes and sequences and explored the design of a peptide library with antibacterial and antimycobacterial activities.

Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (Salmonella) resides and multiplies intracellularly in cholesterol-rich compartments called Salmonella-containing vacuoles (SCVs) with actin-rich tubular extensions known as Salmonella-induced filaments (SIFs). SCV maturation depends on host-derived cholesterol, but the transport mechanism of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-derived cholesterol to SCVs remains unclear. Here we find that peroxisomes are recruited to SCVs and function as pro-bacterial organelle.
