Article Synopsis
  • Aging can lead to cognitive impairment and is associated with lower nitric oxide (NO) levels, insulin resistance, and vitamin D deficiency.
  • This study examined the effects of nitric oxide, insulin resistance, and vitamin D on cognitive function in individuals aged 60 and older, comparing 64 participants with cognitive impairment to 40 control participants.
  • Results showed significantly lower serum NOx levels in those with cognitive impairment, indicating that NO may play a crucial role in brain function, while vitamin D and insulin resistance levels did not show significant differences between groups.

Background: Cancer treatment has improved over the past decades, but many cancer patients still experience adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Pharmacogenomics (PGx), known as personalized treatment, is a pillar of precision medicine that aims to optimize the efficacy and safety of medications by studying the germline variations. Germline variations in the DPYD lead to significant ADRs.

Background: The population of older adults has been consistently on the rise. We aimed to assess the possible relationship between cognitive decline and anthropometric indices in older adults, using data from the Birjand longitudinal aging study (BLAS).

Methods: In this cross-sectional research, the association between cognitive impairment as determined by two tests (Six Item Cognitive Impairment Test (6-CIT)) and (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)) and anthropometric indices including waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist to height ratio (WHtR), waist to hip ratio (WHR), body roundness index (BRI), and a body shape index (ABSI) were assessed among 1353 elderly ≥ 60 years old, participating in the BLAS cohort study (September 2018 to April 2019).

Article Synopsis
  • Persistent high blood sugar levels significantly increase the risk of cognitive disorders in older adults with diabetes, as both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are linked to cognitive impairment.
  • A study involving 1,533 older adults showed that 45.2% experienced cognitive impairment, with higher average hemoglobin A1C and blood glucose levels in those affected.
  • Analysis revealed that diabetes was associated with a 48% higher likelihood of cognitive impairment, particularly in older individuals, women, and those with other health issues like high blood pressure.

Article Synopsis
  • Frailty is a complex condition in older adults that makes them more vulnerable to stress, and metabolomics studies can help us understand its underlying mechanisms.
  • A systematic review analyzed 21 studies that evaluated the metabolomics profile of frail individuals, highlighting significant differences in metabolite levels compared to healthier subjects.
  • Key findings included lower levels of branched-chain amino acids and carnitine, along with higher levels of glutamate and glutamine in frail individuals, indicating a complex biochemical relationship that could help expand our understanding of frailty.
