Background: It is unclear whether resistance training in combination with different timing of protein intake might have differential effects on muscle hypertrophy, strength, and performance. Therefore, we compared the effects of 8 weeks of resistance training combined with two different high-protein diet strategies (immediately pre-and after, or 3 h pre and after exercise) in resistance-trained males.

Methods: Forty resistance-trained males (24 ± 4 years) performed 8 weeks of resistance training combined with 2 g kg d protein.

Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) contributes to the progression of DR, but how is unclear. In homeostasis of the retinal microvasculature, myeloid-derived pro-angiogenic cells (PACs) also play a pivotal role, and fail to function properly in diabetic conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious eye condition linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and this study investigates the role of myelomonocytic proangiogenic cells (PAC) in its development.
  • The researchers compared PAC from healthy individuals to those from T2DM patients, both with and without DR, examining their characteristics and abilities to support blood vessel formation.
  • Results showed that T2DM PAC have altered properties and functions, which could contribute to poor vascular support in the eye and potentially lead to harmful new blood vessel growth in DR.

A growing body of evidence suggests voluntary physical activity is associated with decreased stress-related disorders such as anxiety- and depression-like behaviours in both humans and rodents. The postpartum period is also a vulnerable transition time for the development of these neurobehavioural disorders in women. This study aimed to determine whether voluntary physical activity during pregnancy and postpartum period can increase maternal care and decrease anxiety- and depression-related behaviours in postpartum dams.

Manufacturing of cell therapy products requires sufficient understanding of the cell culture variables and associated mechanisms for adequate control and risk analysis. The aim of this study was to apply an unstructured ordinary differential equation-based model for prediction of T-cell bioprocess outcomes as a function of process input parameters. A series of models were developed to represent the growth of T-cells as a function of time, culture volumes, cell densities, and glucose concentration using data from the Ambr®15 stirred bioreactor system.

Standardization is crucial when culturing cells including human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) which are valuable for therapy development and disease modeling. Inherent issues regarding reproducibility of protocols are problematic as they hinder translation to good manufacturing practice (GMP), thus reducing clinical efficacy and uptake. Pluripotent cultures require standardization to ensure that input material is consistent prior to differentiation, as inconsistency of input cells creates end-product variation.
