A shrapnel migration from a peripheral vein to the right ventricle: case report.

Background: Foreign bodies that migrate into the heart may include medical devices dislodged from their original location or, rarely, external particles (shrapnel and other foreign bodies) that penetrate the vein, remain intraluminal, and migrate via the venous blood flow to the right heart. Most reported entry sites of these external foreign bodies were in the torso, thigh, or neck; none of them penetrated through a distal extremity of the body. We report a case where shrapnel was found in the right ventricle (RV) following penetrating injury to the hand.

The Usefulness of the CHADS-VASc Score to Predict Outcomes in Patients with Infective Endocarditis.

Despite diagnostic and therapeutic advances, infective endocarditis (IE) is still associated with high mortality rates. Currently, there are no good prognostic tools for the risk assessment of patients with IE. The CHADS-VASc score, used to estimate the risk of ischemic stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF), has been shown to be a powerful predictor of stroke and death in patients without known AF associated with other cardiovascular conditions.

Purpose: Automatic speech analysis (ASA) and automatic speech recognition systems are increasingly being used in the treatment of speech sound disorders (SSDs). When utilized as a home practice tool or in the absence of the clinician, the ASA system has the potential to facilitate treatment gains. However, the feedback accuracy of such systems varies, a factor that may impact these gains.

Core outcomes in nerve surgery: development of a core outcome set for common peroneal (fibular) neuropathy.

Objective: Common peroneal (fibular) neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower extremity. Despite this, there are surprisingly few studies on the topic, and a knowledge gap remains in the literature. As one attempts to address this knowledge gap, a core outcome set (COS) is needed to guide the planning phases of future studies to allow synthesis and comparability of these studies.

Inverse Mpemba Effect Demonstrated on a Single Trapped Ion Qubit.

The Mpemba effect is a counterintuitive phenomena in which a hot system reaches a cold temperature faster than a colder system, under otherwise identical conditions. Here, we propose a quantum analog of the Mpemba effect, on the simplest quantum system, a qubit. Specifically, we show it exhibits an inverse effect, in which a cold qubit reaches a hot temperature faster than a hot qubit.

Setting the morphologic quality limits enabling accurate classification of charred archaeological grape seeds.

This study investigates the morphological changes in grape pips resulting from various charring conditions. Employing high-resolution scanning combined with morphometric measurements for morphological analysis, we aimed to understand the effects of charring on grape pips. Our morphometric analysis demonstrated significant alterations in seed shape above 250 °C.

Sustained reduction of essential tremor with low-power non-thermal transcranial focused ultrasound stimulations in humans.

Background: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique; when skull aberrations are compensated for, this technique allows, with millimetric accuracy, circumvention of the invasive surgical procedure associated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) and the limited spatial specificity of transcranial magnetic stimulation.

In the first, the tunneling current between two edges at different chemical potentials is measured. In the second, one of these edges is strongly diluted by an earlier point contact.

Automatic planning of MR-guided transcranial focused ultrasound treatment for essential tremor.

Introduction: Transcranial focused ultrasound therapy (tcFUS) offers precise thermal ablation for treating Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. Individual Differences in Auditory Training Benefits for Hearing Aid Users.

The present study aimed to examine whether individual differences in baseline speech perception could serve as predictors for the effectiveness and generalization of auditory training (AT) to non-trained tasks. Twelve adults, aged 60-75 years with bilateral hearing loss, completed a two-month, home-based, computerized AT program, involving sessions four times per week. A Pilot Study of Dynamic Magnetic Resonance Dacryocystography Imaging to Assess Functional Epiphora.

Objective: To evaluate dynamic magnetic resonance dacryocystography (MRDCG) in eyes with functional epiphora.

Methods: We included prospective eyes with epiphora if no alternative cause was found on clinical examination, were patent on syringing, had no obstruction or stenosis on DCG, and had an abnormal DSG. MRDCG was performed to qualitatively assess for block or patency and quantitatively measure tear transit time.
