Storax is a traditional Chinese herb that is widely applied in stroke treatment. However, its neuroprotective effects and mechanisms are yet to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to elucidate the neuroprotective effects and underlying mechanisms of storax on oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) in injured cortical neurons.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The lack of widely applicable pharmacological treatments for ischemic stroke patients has led to a growing interest in traditional medicine. The identification of pharmacologically active components of the clinically used traditional medicine has been considered translationally significant. Objectives: To investigate whether Shengmai injection (SMI) helps to improve cardiac function and enhances angiogenesis after myocardial ischaemia reperfusion injury (MIRI). A rat model of MIRI was created via occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery for 30 min, followed by 3 days or 7 days of reperfusion (n = 6 each group).

Backgrounds: SMI is widely used for the treatment of myocardial infarction.

Neuropathological injury in the mammalian adult central nervous system (CNS) may cause axon disruption, neuronal death and lasting neurological deficits. Failure of axon regeneration is one of the major challenges for CNS functional recovery. Recently, the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway has been proven to be a critical regulator for neuronal regeneration, neuroplasticity, learning and memory.

Vascular inflammatory injury leads to vascular endothelial dysfunction, thereby resulting in a variety of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Thus, attenuating vascular inflammatory injury has great significance for the prevention and treatment of CVDs. In China, Shenmai formula, a well-known ancient Chinese prescription, has been widely used to treat CVDs, such as coronary atherosclerosis and viral myocarditis.
