Pseudobulbs of Pleione bulbocodioides have been used as traditional Chinese medicine for a long time to treat cancers through decoction with water. However, as its main water-soluble ingredient, the structure of polysaccharide has not been elucidated yet. To obtain its polysaccharide with antitumor activity, a series of isolation, structural identification and antitumor evaluation experiments were performed.

Despite the current recognition of and as two separate valid species of China, neither species have been revised based on examination of their types and/or topotypical materials, nor have they genetically analyzed. In this study, examination of the holotype of showed that it has a serrated anterior edge of the pectoral spine, a slightly emarginate caudal fin, and longer maxillary barbels extending beyond the base of the pectoral spine, the characters shared with specimens currently identified as . Morphological comparisons and molecular analysis showed that specimens from mainland China, which are characterized by the three mentioned morphological features, represent a single species.

Article Synopsis
  • China has a unique and diverse range of freshwater fish species, but human activities have severely threatened this biodiversity, making conservation efforts urgently needed.
  • A recent assessment identified 355 at-risk freshwater fish species, with significant numbers classified as Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable, while habitat loss, particularly due to damming, is the main cause of these threats.
  • To improve conservation outcomes, a proposal includes conducting comprehensive surveys for fish diversity, reassessing at-risk species, enhancing conservation planning, developing protected areas, using genetic-based breeding, and implementing flexible fishing regulations.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence suggests that the diversity of freshwater fish species, particularly bagrid species in South China, is underestimated in current taxonomy.
  • A study conducted across 40 localities found nine distinct lineages, classifying them into eight geographic populations, leading to the identification of four recognized species and highlighting one new species with two genetically different lineages.
  • The findings emphasize the importance of using molecular analysis alongside traditional methods for species identification and call for updated conservation strategies to protect the rich yet overlooked diversity of lowland fish.

  • The study explores how nonmetallic inclusions in 304 stainless steel evolve during heat treatment at 1250 °C over different time intervals (0, 30, 60, and 120 minutes).
  • The research finds that the density of inclusions initially increases and then decreases, while their average size follows an opposite trend.
  • Furthermore, chromium oxide (CrO) content in the inclusions rises with heat treatment time, which increases their melting points but decreases their plasticity, highlighting the significance of Ostwald ripening in the process.
