Objective: To isolate a kind of endophytic fungus which can produce taxol compounds from the bark of Taxus Cuspidata Sieb et Zucc.

Methods: Endophytic fungus was isolated from the bark of Taxus Cuspidata Sieb et Zucc by aseptic techniques and the analysis of the culture fluid from the fermentation of fungus was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Results: Endophytic fungus was obtained from the bark of Taxus Cuspidata Sieb et Zucc and the chemical analysis showed that the culture of fungus contain taxol compounds.

Objective: To provide molecular evidences for its breeding by studying the genetic relationship among varieties of Rehmannia glutinosa.

Method: Nineteen varieties were detected by Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA(RAPD) markers.

Result: The 20 selected primers produced 163 bands, among which 114(69.

Altered vitamin D receptor (VDR) level has been proposed to explain differences in intestinal responsiveness to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3]. We tested whether the enterocyte VDR level influences 1,25(OH)2D3-mediated gene expression and transepithelial calcium (Ca) transport in the human intestinal cell line Caco-2. Cells were stably transfected with a human metallothionein (hMT) IIA promoter-human VDR (hVDR) complementary DNA (cDNA) transgene that overexpressed hVDR in response to heavy metals.

We have previously shown that dextran (molecular weight 4kDa) is a potential mucolytic agent, reducing the viscoelasticity and spinnability of cystic fibrosis (CF) sputum and improving its mucociliary clearability during in vitro testing. We wished to see whether low molecular weight (LMW) dextran had similar effects on mucus rheology when administered by aerosol to living dogs, and whether the administration of dextran increased the rate of mucociliary clearance. Healthy mongrel dogs were anesthetized with pentobarbital and intubated.

UDP-glucose:(1,3)-beta-glucan (callose) synthase (CS) from storage tissue of red beet (Beta vulgaris L.) was strongly inhibited by the phenothiazine drug chlorpromazine (CPZ). In the absence of ultraviolet irradiation, CPZ was a noncompetitive inhibitor with 50% inhibitory concentration values for plasma membrane and solubilized CS of 100 and 90 mum, respectively.

To assess the changes of calcium metabolism and osteopathy in patients with diabetes. Serum Ca, P, AKP, PTH, CT, plasma fasting blood glucose (FBG) and HbA1 as well as X-ray film of the lumbar spine were measured in 30 diabetes patients; 11 were IDDM and 19 were NIDDM as compared to controls matched for age and sex. There were no significant differences in Ca, P, and CT values in serum between the IDDM and NIDDM patients and controls, whereas the serum levels of PTH and AKP were significant increased in IDDM patients.

In this report, we have established that natural killer (NK) cells can increase IgG2a secretion by B lymphocytes as well as alter the distribution of the remaining immunoglobulin isotypes. The effect of NK cells on B cell differentiation is similar to that obtained by the direct addition of recombinant interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and, therefore, most likely results from the elaboration of IFN-gamma by NK cells, this is a clear demonstration that NK cells can regulate cell function(s) via a mechanism other than cytotoxicity. In addition, we have shown that the induction of NK cells by B lymphocytes requires close interactions between the two cell types.

To assess the long-term effect of islet transplantation on metabolic abnormalities and chronic complications of diabetic recipients, the long-term follow-up data of 36 type 1 diabetic subjects with functioning islet grafts for more than 1 year were analysed in this article. 36 type 1 diabetics, with mean age of 34.30 +/- 12.
