Article Synopsis
  • - PDE4 inhibitors like roflumilast are newer medications that help with breathing and reduce inflammation, which raises concerns about their potential use as performance enhancers in sports.
  • - This study explores how roflumilast is metabolized in thoroughbred horses through both oral administration and lab methods, revealing numerous metabolites generated during this process.
  • - The research identified various metabolic alterations, including hydroxylation and methylation, and highlighted products that could aid in detecting roflumilast misuse in equestrian competitions.

Rationale: Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitors are a newer class of drugs that induce bronchodilation and have anti-inflammatory effects, making them susceptible to misuse as performance enhancers in competitive sports.

Methods: This study explores the metabolic conversion of PDE4 inhibitor ibudilast in thoroughbred horses after oral administration and in vitro using equine liver microsomes and Cunninghamella elegans. A liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry method was used to postulate the plausible structures of the detected metabolites.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on isolating and analyzing 30 ExPEC strains from sick camel calves that died from septicemia, highlighting their ability to cause systemic infections.
  • Six of the strains exhibited a hypermucoviscous phenotype, and several were found to be multidrug resistant, including resistance to colistin, which is a last-resort antibiotic.
  • The research also revealed that some strains have mixed virulence traits linked to intestinal pathotypes, indicating a genetic diversity that could enhance their resistance and pathogenic capabilities, suggesting potential risks for both animal health and zoonotic transmission to humans.

A dopamine reuptake inhibitor is a type of medication or substance that works by blocking the reuptake of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine reuptake inhibitors offer multiple effects, including increased alertness, improved mood, and therapeutic potential for conditions like depression, ADHD, and Parkinson's disease. HDMP-28, or methylnaphthidate, is a potent synthetic stimulant from the phenyltropane class.

Article Synopsis
  • * A new Multi Locus Sequence Typing Assay (cgMLST) was developed, targeting 3,328 genes, allowing for detailed strain-level analysis and validation with 120 existing genomes and 23 new outbreak strains.
  • * The assay effectively distinguishes strains from different regions by at least 70 genetic differences, proving robust and reliable for tracking outbreaks and characterizing new strains without being affected by various sequencing methods.

Six horses were challenged experimentally with a strain of Burkholderia pseudomallei isolated from a fatal case of the infection in a dromedary camel years earlier in the Emirate of Dubai. Three horses were inoculated subcutaneously and in 3 the bacterium was administered by the oral route. Four of the horses became serologically positive based on reactions to one or more of the OIE described tests for glanders.

Aspergillosis in falcons may be associated with high mortality and difficulties in clinical and laboratory diagnosis. We previously cloned an immunogenic protein, Afmp1p, in Aspergillus fumigatus and showed that anti-Afmp1p antibodies were present in human patients with A. fumigatus infections.
