The newly defined scope emphasizes the art and science of caring, compassionate presence, and the expectation that nurses be advocates for all, recognizing the connections of all humanity. It also makes frequent reference to whole-person care and highlights the importance of mindfulness by inviting nurses to reflect on how they can incorporate mindfulness and other integrative therapies into their self-care and professional practice.

The COVID-19 pandemic made creative problem-solving, a skill that nurses have long possessed, more observable and valued. This article presents a new professional practice model for nursing innovation that facilitates practice improvements and leverages skills, strengths, and values that are integral to nursing. A creative art expression intervention using hand lettering was implemented on an outpatient oncology unit and evaluated for feasibility and its relationship with stress and anxiety in patients with cancer. Results suggest that a hand lettering intervention is feasible in this type of setting and may benefit patients experiencing stress and anxiety during outpatient treatment.
