Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies on blood transfusions in low birth weight and preterm neonates are limited, prompting this research to address their transfusion patterns and benefits.
  • The study examined 101 preterm neonates in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, finding that transfusion needs decreased with higher gestational age and birth weight, with most transfusions occurring in the first two weeks of life.
  • The results indicated a high success rate (96% uneventful transfusions) and significant hemoglobin improvement after transfusions, supporting the effectiveness of restrictive transfusion protocols in reducing unnecessary blood use.

Sponges invariably filter a large volume of seawater and potentially accumulate heavy metals and other contaminants from the environment. Sponges, being sessile marine invertebrates and modular in body organization, can live many years in the same location and therefore have the capability to accumulate anthropogenic pollutants such as metals over a long period. Almost all marine sponges harbor large number of microorganisms within their tissues where they reside in the extra- and intra-cellular spaces.
