Introduction: This prospective, observational study investigated the impact of patient/anesthesiologist interactions and socioeconomic factors on administering intravenous analgesics and anxiolytics during elective Cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia. The study explored the role of emotional experiences and psychosocial characteristics on intraoperative administration of intravenous adjuncts.

Methods: The study included 502 patient/anesthesiologist dyads from two hospitals in Israel.

Working memory (WM) training has gained interest due to its potential to enhance cognitive functioning and reduce symptoms of mental disorders. Nevertheless, inconsistent results suggest that individual differences may have an impact on training efficacy. This study examined whether individual differences in training performance can predict therapeutic outcomes of WM training, measured as changes in anxiety and depression symptoms in sub-clinical and healthy populations.

Accumulating evidence suggests that cognitive training may enhance well-being. Yet, mixed findings imply that individual differences and training characteristics may interact to moderate training efficacy. To investigate this possibility, the current paper describes a protocol for a data-driven individual-level meta-analysis study aimed at developing personalized cognitive training.

Background: Health behaviors including smoking cessation, physical activity (PA), and alcohol moderation are key aspects of cancer survivorship. Immigrants may have unique survivorship needs. We evaluated whether immigrant cancer survivors had health behaviors and perceptions that were distinct from native-born cancer survivors.

Continued consumption of alcohol after a cancer diagnosis is associated with poorer outcomes. We evaluated whether perceptions of the effects of continued alcohol use and receiving information on moderating alcohol reduced alcohol consumption in adult cancer survivors. A total of 509 cancer survivors were cross-sectionally surveyed at follow-up for their alcohol use before and after cancer diagnosis and perceptions of continued drinking.

Purpose: Physical activity (PA) during and after cancer treatment is associated with improved cancer- and non-cancer-related outcomes. We assessed for predictors of change in PA levels among cancer survivors.

Methods: Adult cancer survivors from a comprehensive cancer center completed a one-time questionnaire retrospectively assessing PA levels before, during, and after cancer treatment along with their perceptions of PA.

Major hemorrhage is a significant contributor to the morbidity and mortality resulting from traumatic injury. In addition to its role in in early mortality, hemorrhagic shock followed by resuscitation (HS/R) is known to initiate immunological events that contribute to the development of organ dysfunction. The pathogenesis of acute lung injury following HS/R involves macrophage activation.

Purpose: To quantify the structural and material properties of 10-mm central sections of the quadriceps and patellar tendons in the setting of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using cadaveric grafts and biomechanical analysis.

Methods: The structural and mechanical properties of 11 bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and 12 quadriceps tendon-bone (QT) allografts were evaluated. Ten-millimeter-wide tendon grafts from both patellar and quadriceps tendons were harvested and subjected to biomechanical testing using the MTS servohydraulic test machine (MTS Systems, Eden Prairie, MN).

Purpose: Improved cancer screening and treatment have led to a greater focus on cancer survivorship care. Older cancer survivors may be a unique population. We evaluated whether older cancer survivors (age ≥ 65 years) had lifestyle behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge distinct from younger survivors.

In this study, we compared cancer patients preference for computerised (tablet/web-based) surveys versus paper. We also assessed whether the understanding of a cancer-related topic, pharmacogenomics is affected by the survey format, and examined differences in demographic and medical characteristics which may affect patient preference and understanding. Three hundred and four cancer patients completed a tablet-administered survey and another 153 patients completed a paper-based survey.

People with serious mental illness face stigma that interferes with recovery. Photovoice is a method that integrates photography and writing, providing a valuable means for capturing the narratives of people with mental illness whose voices are often marginalized. The purpose of the present article is to explore the meaning of recovery for individuals with serious mental illness based on a qualitative analysis of a new photovoice-based intervention, Recovery Narrative Photovoice.

Visibility of an oriented stimulus may be enhanced by nearby stimuli that are co-aligned with the target. However, the underlying mechanism governing this facilitation is controversial. Here we measured the dependence of percent correct detection on the target's contrast (psychometric curve) with and without flankers, where flankers were either collinear with or orthogonal to the target.

Procedural pain includes any pain or discomfort inflicted by medical care or treatment. Procedural pain is the leading cause of pain and discomfort in children with malignancies. During the last five years the authors employed a multidisciplinary team including oncologists, anesthesiologists, nurses and ancillary and support staff, aiming to treat and minimize procedural pain.

We attempted to resolve an apparent conflict between the lack of psychophysical evidence of collinear facilitation at the near-periphery and physiological evidence from the monkey showing collinear effects extra-fovealy. We compared collinear and orthogonal configurations to discount facilitation due to reduced positional uncertainty. Detection thresholds were measured for Gabor targets at eccentricities of 0 degrees - 4 degrees, flanked by collinear or orthogonal flankers.

On discharge from an acute general hospital after a stroke, 191 patients were in need of, and were appropriate for, multidisciplinary rehabilitation. One-hundred-and-one patients (52.4%) received it in a rehabilitation institution as inpatients (the institutional rehabilitation group (IR) group) and 91 patients received it at home (the home rehabilitation (HR) group).
