Background: Cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) infections without early diagnosis, treatment, and proper follow-up are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and worse outcomes.  Objective: This study aims to identify patients presenting for hospital admission with bacteremia and the presence of CIED by implementing a best practice advisory (BPA) notification in the electronic medical record to facilitate early consultation with the cardiac electrophysiology (EP) team and treatment.

Methods: A BPA was implemented into the electronic medical record (EMR) EPIC in 2022 and was generated for any patient that presented to our health system with bacteremia and the presence of a CIED.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is associated with proinflammatory states and adverse health outcomes such as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). Limited evidence suggests that COVID-19 vaccination may decrease the adverse impact of COVID-19 infections. This study was designed to determine if patients who received COVID-19 vaccination had lower mortality from STEMI and CVA.

Background: Post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome derives from lingering symptoms after an acute COVID-19 infection. Palpitation was one of the most common symptoms of post-COVID-19 syndrome that correlated with objective data such as persisting sinus tachycardia; but to our best knowledge, there is a scarcity of research regarding the association of COVID-19 and sinus tachycardia in the post-acute setting. Therefore, the purpose was to identify if there is an association between COVID-19 infection and sinus tachycardia in the post-acute phase, namely post-COVID-19 tachycardia (PCT) other than inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Purpose: In 2019, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommended genetic testing for all patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). To evaluate the status of implementation of these guidelines in a loco-regional setting, we performed a retrospective, observational study among patients with newly diagnosed PDAC who received oncologic care at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Georgia.

Methods: Chart abstraction of patients with newly diagnosed PDAC from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021 was performed to include information on genetic testing recommendation and completion, and time from diagnosis to testing.

Drug-mediated correction of abnormal biological zinc homeostasis could provide new routes to treating neurodegeneration, cancer, and viral infections. Designing therapeutics to facilitate zinc transport intracellularly is hampered by inadequate concentrations of endogenous zinc, which is often protein-bound in vivo. We found strong evidence that hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to treat malaria and employed as a potential treatment for COVID-19, does not bind and transport zinc across biological membranes through ionophoric mechanisms, contrary to recent claims.

This study investigated equine nutrition knowledge and educational needs of licensed veterinarians in the United States who were exclusively or predominately equine practitioners. It found veterinarians regard their peers as an important resource of nutritional knowledge, ranking ahead of all other sources except a PhD equine nutritionist. Interestingly, only 21% of veterinarians felt good about their knowledge level in equine nutrition after graduating from veterinary school.

The importance of zinc in biology has gained greater recognition in recent years due to its essential contributions to the function of many endogenous enzymes. Disruption of zinc homeostasis may be useful in treating pathological conditions, such as Alzheimer's, and for antiviral purposes. Despite the growth of knowledge and increased interest in zinc, little is known about the structure and function of zinc ionophores.

Current formulations and dose regimens of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) put patients at risk of harm. An analysis of clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov revealed that this may continue as many studies combine HCQ with agents that prolong the QT interval.
