Activation of both renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the sympathetic system is the primary etiologic event in developing cardiovascular complications in diabetes mellitus (DM). However, the precise mechanisms for sympathetic activation in DM have not been elucidated. Here we attempted to investigate diabetes-linked cardiovascular dysregulation due to angiotensin II (Ang II)-mediated reduction in neuronal nitric oxide (NO) synthase (nNOS) within the paraventricular neuleus (PVN).

The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) regulates sympathetic activity and blood pressure. The regulator of G protein signaling 2 (RGS2) is a negative G protein regulator, which selectively regulates G⍺q signaling, a potential cause of hypertension. This study aimed to examine angiotensin II (ANG II)-G protein-RGS2 signaling on the central mechanisms of blood pressure control, sympathetic activation, and kidney function.

Veins are important in the control of venous return, cardiac output, and cardiovascular homeostasis. However, the effector systems modulating venous function remain to be fully elucidated. We demonstrated that activation of bradykinin-sensitive pericardial afferents elicited systemic venoconstriction.
