Article Synopsis
  • RSA is linked to metabolic imbalances at the maternal-fetal interface, especially concerning essential fatty acids and oxylipins, which may contribute to the risk of spontaneous abortion.
  • Research involved analyzing samples from women experiencing spontaneous abortion and those with normal pregnancies, measuring fatty acid levels and enzyme expressions using advanced techniques like GC-MS and LC-MS.
  • Findings showed that women with recurrent spontaneous abortion had higher omega-6 fatty acid levels in their plasma and chorionic villi but lower levels in the decidua, suggesting a possible dysregulation of fatty acid transport affecting pregnancy outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Intracellular purine- and pyrimidine-related derivatives are crucial for genetic preservation, energy production, and signaling in cells, and this study focused on quantifying these molecules.
  • A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed, which included adding medronic acid and ammonium phosphate to improve measurement accuracy, especially for di- and triphosphate nucleotides.
  • The validated method showed strong accuracy and precision, and was effectively used to analyze changes in these derivatives in A549 cells under mitochondrial stress, potentially paving the way for new drug developments targeting purine and pyrimidine metabolism.

Aflatoxins (AFs), a group of mycotoxins, are generally produced by fungi Aspergillus species. The naturally occurring AFs including AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2 have been clarified as group 1 human carcinogen by International Agency for Research on Cancer. Developing a sensitive analytical method has become an important issue to accurately quantify trace amount of AFs in foodstuffs.

Urinary 8-isoprostaglandin F(2α) (8-isoPGF(2α)) has been reported as an important biomarker to indicate the oxidative stress status in vivo. In order to quantitatively determine the low contents of 8-isoPGF(2α) (in sub- to low ng mL(-1) range) in physiological fluids, a sensitive detection method has become an important issue. In this study, we employed a microfluidic chip-based nano liquid chromatography (chip-nanoLC) with on-chip sample enrichment coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (QqQ-MS) for the quantitative determination of 8-isoPGF(2α) in human urine.

Betel quid chewing, which contributes high concentration of safrole in saliva, is a popular oral habit in Taiwan. Safrole is a documented rodent hepatocarcinogen, yet its hepatocarcinogenic potential in human is not known. Here, we used LC/ESI-ITMS(n) and LC/QTOF-MS confirmed safrole-dGMP as reference standard to detect the safrole-DNA adduct in hepatic tissues from HBsAg-/HCV-seronegative hepatocellular carcinoma patients by (32)P-postlabeling.
