Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) constitute an important class of pharmaceuticals acting on cyclooxygenase COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. Due to their numerous severe side effects, it is necessary to search for new selective, safe, and effective anti-inflammatory drugs. design of novel therapeutics plays an important role in nowadays drug discovery pipelines.

In this study, we investigated the potential in vitro anti-HSV-1 activities of the Cassiopea andromeda jellyfish tentacle extract (TE) and its fractions, as well as computational work on the thymidine kinase (TK) inhibitory activity of the identified secondary metabolites. The LD50, secondary metabolite identification, preparative and analytical chromatography, and in silico TK assessment were performed using the Spearman-Karber, GC-MS, silica gel column chromatography, RP-HPLC, LC-MS, and docking methods, respectively. The antiviral activity of TE and the two purified compounds C and C against HSV-1 in Vero cells was evaluated by MTT and RT-PCR assays.

Article Synopsis
  • Epidemiological studies and genetic analyses are crucial for understanding and managing zoonotic diseases in northeastern Iran, focusing on genetic diversity and phylogeny for the first time.
  • DNA was extracted from 100 confirmed positive samples across various health centers, using specific gene amplification and sequencing to identify genetic similarities and build a phylogenetic tree.
  • Findings revealed that the primary causative agent in the region was identified, showing high genetic diversity among strains, with a significant similarity to reference strains from Isfahan and Ilam, suggesting the need for similar prevention measures in these areas.

Introduction: In acute conditions, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes multi-organ damage due to the induction of inappropriate immune responses, particularly lung tissue fibrosis. To evaluate the consequence of the deterioration of the immune system, autoimmune markers were assessed.

Methods: In a case-control study, 108 patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and 158 outpatients with mild clinical symptoms, with SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) positive tests, were included for comparison.

Purpose: Since late 2019, the novel coronavirus disease has been a global concern, and alongside preventive strategies, including social distancing and personal hygiene, vaccination is now the primary hope for controlling the pandemic. Sputnik V is an adenovirus vector vaccine used against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among Iranian health care providers, and there is a lack of information regarding the Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) by Sputnik V among the Iranian population. The present study aimed to evaluate AEFI by Sputnik V vaccine among Iranian population.

Human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the causative agent of two life-threatening diseases, adult T cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL), and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic (HAM/TSP). HTLV-1 protease (HTLV-1-PR) is an aspartic protease that represents a promising target for therapeutic purposes like human immunodeficiency virus-PR inhibitors (HIV-PR). Therefore, in this study, the human Fc fusion recombinant-PR (HTLV-1-PR:hFcγ1) was designed and expressed for two applications, finding a blocking substrate as a potential therapeutic or a potential subunit peptide vaccine.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between salivary amylase level and computed tomoraphy (CT scan) findings in patients with isolated mild traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) referred to the emergency department of Shahid Hasheminejad Hospital.

Methods: Patients with isolated mTBI and indication for brain CT scan who referred to the trauma center of Shahid Hasheminejad Hospital, Mashhad, Iran in 2019 were included in a cross-sectional study. In the initial examination, the patient's level of consciousness was measured using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and saliva samples were taken at the emergency department to determine the level of salivary amylase.

Here for the first time, a real-time electrochemical assay on unprocessed blood was designed to detect the presence of cancer in patients. The system has been based on the recently approved pathway, which indicates that the abundance of immature and mature low-density neutrophils (LDNs) with reduced ROS production in peripheral blood is increased with the presence of active cancer tumors. Reduced ROS/HO released from LDNs play the main role in determining the ROS/HO levels of peripheral blood.

Background: To compare mRNA expression of interleukin 10 (IL-10), interleukin 17 (IL-17) and Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) in aqueous humor (AH) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in human ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) and controls.

Method: RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis and real-time polymerase chain reaction were performed on AH sediments and PBMCs of 16 patients with active OT and 21 controls at the Khatam-al-Anbia Eye Hospital, Iran. For comparison, Mann Whitney U test was used at a discrimination level of p < 0.

Background: Over the last decade, a few cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have been reported in some provinces of northeastern Iran. We aimed to investigate clinical and laboratory findings of VL among children who admitted to the pediatric ward in a referral hospital in Mashhad, northeastern Iran.

Methods: A retrospective study, between 1997 and 2017, was performed on the data sheet registered for children with confirmed VL at the referral Emam Reza Hospital in Mashhad.

Human T lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is a well-known human oncovirus, associated with two life-threatening diseases, adult T cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). The study of this oncogenic virus is significant from two different aspects. First, HTLV-1 can be considered as a neglected public health problem, which may spread slowly worldwide.

Objectives: Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are the main etiology of invasive cervical cancer. Together HPV and viral hepatitis account for the cause of 25% of cancers in developing countries. To evaluate the association between population movements and the spread of HPV, this study looked at prevalence, genotypes, and phylogenetic assessment of HPV in Great Khorasan, a pilgrimage-tourism province in northeast Iran.

The province of Khorasan-Razavi in the North East of Iran is an endemic area for anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL caused mainly by ) and zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL caused mainly by ). Based on clinical signs, some cities were considered as ACL foci while others were considered to be endemic for ZCL. This paper reviews studies performed on patients diagnosed with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) via the use of direct slide examination, ELISA, electrophoresis isoenzyme, RAPD PCR and PCR in Mashhad; the study also includes cases of CL in other cities of the Khorasan-Razavi province where only PCR used as a diagnostic tool.
