Article Synopsis
  • Foxtail millet is vital in underdeveloped nations, but its productivity is limited; diverse germplasm in breeding can enhance yields, especially in hot, dry climates.
  • The study analyzed 50 genotypes in the first year and 10 in the second, using multivariant traits and statistical methods to identify significant phenotypic variations among them.
  • Genotypic and phenotypic analysis revealed that traits like panicle weight and test weight positively correlated with grain yield, guiding effective selection strategies for improving foxtail millet productivity.

Background: Selection for grain yield under drought is an efficient criterion for improving the drought tolerance of rice. Recently, some drought-tolerant rice varieties have been developed using this selection criterion and successfully released for cultivation in drought-prone target environments. The process can be made more efficient and rapid through marker-assisted breeding, a well-known fast-track approach in crop improvement.
