Article Synopsis
  • Heterozygous females with G6PD deficiency can experience serious health issues similar to hemizygous males and homozygous females, especially when exposed to oxidative stress from foods, drugs, or infections.
  • Conventional enzyme assays typically detect G6PD deficiency in males and homozygous females, but may overlook heterozygous females due to a mix of normal and deficient red blood cells.
  • This study demonstrated that high resolution melting (HRM) analysis is effective in identifying G6PD heterozygosity, finding more cases than the enzyme assay alone, which could help avert serious health risks for their newborns.
