Prognostic significance of pretreatment thrombocytosis in endometrial cancer: an Israeli Gynecologic Oncology Group study.

Objective: Endometrial cancer prognosis is related to stage, histology, myometrial invasion, and lymphovascular space invasion. Several studies have examined the association between pretreatment thrombocytosis and patient outcomes with contrasting results regarding prognosis. Our aim was to evaluate the association of pretreatment platelet count with outcomes in endometrial cancer patients.

Compassion fatigue among nurses working in a long-term care facility: The Israeli experience.

Nurses working in a long-term care facility could be at risk of developing compassion fatigue due to the nature of their work. In this descriptive, cross-sectional survey, we explored the level of compassion fatigue among nurses working in a long-term care facility, as well as the associated sociodemographic and occupational factors. In total, 103 nurses employed in various departments of a long-term care facility in central Israel completed the Hebrew version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale R-IV.

Pain Assessment and Management by Nurses in a Geriatric Setting: Discrepancies between Guidelines and Documented Practice.

Background: Pain is a common subjective symptom among older adults in general and among older adult residents in long-term geriatric facilities in particular. Pain diminishes older adults' quality of life and may impair their ability to recover from various illnesses. Therefore, the Israeli Ministry of Health has issued guidelines on effectively assessing and treating pain in this population.

Estimation of interaction energy and contact stiffness in atomic-scale sliding on a model sodium chloride surface in ethanol.

Friction force microscopy (FFM) in aqueous environments has recently proven to be a very effective method for lattice-resolution imaging of crystal surfaces. Here we demonstrate the use of ethanol for similar measurements on water-soluble materials. Lattice resolved frictional stick-slip traces of a cleaved NaCl(100) surface submerged in ethanol are compared with previous obtained FFM results in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV).

Coping strategies, satisfaction with life, and quality of life in Crohn's disease: A gender perspective using structural equation modeling analysis.

Objective: To identify coping strategies and socio-demographics impacting satisfaction with life and quality of life in Crohn's disease (CD).

Methods: 402 patients completed the Patient Harvey-Bradshaw Index, Brief COPE Inventory, Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ). We performed structural equation modeling (SEM) of mediators of quality of life and satisfaction with life.

Intention to receive the seasonal influenza vaccine among nurses working in a long-term care facility.

The factors affecting influenza vaccine uptake among nurses might vary between different medical facilities. The purpose of the present study was to explore factors that affect the intention of nurses at a long-term care facility to receive the influenza vaccine and whether the health belief model predicts this intention. In this cross-sectional quantitative correlational study, a convenience sample of 150 nurses employed at a large long-term care facility in central Israel completed a questionnaire based on the health belief model.

Effect of psychosocial stressors on patients with Crohn's disease: threatening life experiences and family relations.

Background And Aims: Threatening life experiences and adverse family relations are major psychosocial stressors affecting mental and physical health in chronic illnesses, but their influence in Crohn's disease (CD) is unclear. We assessed whether these stressors would predict the psychological and medical condition of CD patients.

Methods: Consecutive adult CD patients completed a series of instruments including demography, Patient Harvey-Bradshaw Index (P-HBI), Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ), short-form survey instrument (SF-36), brief symptom inventory (BSI), family assessment device (FAD), and list of threatening life experiences (LTE).

Expression and chromosomal organization of mouse meiotic genes.

Microarray technology which enables large scale analysis of gene expression and thus comparison between transcriptomes of different cell types, cells undergoing different treatments or cells at different developmental stages has also been used to study the transcriptome involved with spermatogenesis. Many new germ cell-specific genes were determined, and the resulting genes were classified according to different criteria. However, the biological significance of these classifications and their clustering according to developmental transcriptional patterns during spermatogenesis have not yet been addressed.

Disclosing bad news to patients with life-threatening illness: differences in attitude between physicians and nurses in Israel.

Scant attention has been paid to the decision-making process of caregivers in disclosing bad news to patients. The purpose of this study was to describe factors influencing this process and to ascertain whether physicians and nurses behave differently, based on Ajzen and Fishbein's (1980) theory of reasoned action (TRA). In this correlational quantitative research study, a validated anonymous questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample comprising 100 physicians and 200 nurses employed in several Israeli hospitals.

Exercise training alters the molecular response to myocardial infarction.

Purpose: We and others have shown that swimming exercise training performed before irreversible coronary occlusion improves the outcome of the heart injury and alters gene expression at the remodeling phase. The purpose of the current study was to identify temporal changes in the molecular response to myocardial infraction of prior exercise trained rats during the acute, the subacute, and the chronic phases postinfarction.

Methods: Rats underwent a 7-wk swimming or sedentary protocol and were subjected to surgical induction of acute myocardial infarction (MI).

Discharge planning in acute care hospitals in Israel: services planned and levels of implementation and adequacy.

This study aimed to examine the implementation, adequacy, and outcomes of discharge planning. The authors carried out a prospective study of 1,426 adult patients discharged from 11 acute care hospitals in Israel. Social workers provided detailed discharge plans on each patient.

Cost-utility analysis of vaccination against HPV in Israel.

Using WHO-CHOICE methodology, we calculated cost-utility ratios for various interventions (PAP smear, HPV-DNA testing, VIA and vaccination against HPV) at various frequencies to reduce the burden of cervical cancer and condyloma (in the case of the HPV vaccination) in Israel, which has a low prevalence of cervical cancer. Assuming non-waning efficacy, HPV vaccinations will become cost-effective, very cost-effective and cost saving when the cost per dose falls below $96.85, $50.

Help seeking and barriers to utilisation of medical and health social work services among ageing immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union.

The study aimed to examine utilisation of medical and health social work services among ageing recent and long-term immigrants, to identify barriers to service utilisation, and to examine factors related to utilisation. Participants (n = 402) recruited from a random community sample of immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Israel, aged 55 and over, residing in urban areas throughout the country were interviewed by telephone. Using an expanded framework of Andersen's behavioural model, the independent variables included predisposing, enabling and need variables, and additional variables--barriers to utilisation or difficulties encountered during utilisation of services.

Effects of aerobic training on gene expression in skeletal muscle of elderly men.

Purpose: To analyze the effect of 3 months of training on global gene expression in skeletal muscle of healthy elderly men in order to better characterize the pathways that differentiate the trained from the sedentary state.

Methods: Needle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis of six healthy, sedentary, 68.0 +/- 2.

Utilization of health social work services by older immigrants and veterans in Israel.

The authors examined factors related to utilization of health social work services among older immigrants from the former Soviet Union and veteran residents of Israel, using Andersen's behavioral model. A sample of 476 patients age 55 and older was interviewed. The immigrants and veterans had similar backgrounds, but immigrants had fewer resources and higher need.

Neuroprotection by NGF in the PC12 in vitro OGD model: involvement of mitogen-activated protein kinases and gene expression.

Neurodegenerative disorders and chronic disability due to stroke in the brain or spinal cord afflict a large sector of the population. To investigate the mechanism involved in ischemic stroke and to develop neuroprotective drugs/therapies, in vivo and in vitro, pharmacological models are needed. To investigate the cellular and molecular neuroprotective mechanisms of nerve growth factor (NGF), a member of the nervous system neurotrophin family of growth factors, under ischemia, we used an oxygen-glucose-deprivation (OGD) device and pheochromocytoma PC12 cells exposed to a paradigm of ischemic insult.

Gene expression profiling of in vivo UVB-irradiated human epidermis.

Background: Several recent studies have employed microarray profiling to study UVB-regulated gene expression in human skin. These studies are all based on UV-irradiated cultured cells that differ substantially from the intact tissues they are supposed to imitate. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the differential expression of UVB-regulated genes in intact human epidermis following in vivo UV irradiation.

Sil overexpression in lung cancer characterizes tumors with increased mitotic activity.

Sil (SCL interrupting locus) was cloned from the most common chromosomal rearrangement in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is an immediate early gene whose expression is associated with cell proliferation. Sil protein levels are tightly regulated during the cell cycle, reaching peak levels in mitosis and disappearing on transition to G1.

Mental and motor switching in Parkinson's disease.

Switching difficulties in Parkinson's disease (PD) are expressed in both mental and motor tasks. The authors of the present study investigated whether those deficits coexist in the same patient and are positively correlated. They tested 8 nondemented PD patients and 6 age-matched control participants by using the modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and a motor switching paradigm that is based on the task of reaching toward visual targets, the location of which could unexpectedly be altered within the reaction time.

Morphological and biochemical properties of alveolar fibroblasts in interstitial lung diseases.

The phenotype of alveolar-associated fibroblasts (Afb) in sarcoidosis (SA) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is unclear. In the present study, we characterized the cytoskeletal proteins and the contraction properties in alveolar-associated fibroblasts recovered by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in the two diseases. Afb were studied from BAL cells in eight IPF and seven SA patients.

A description of inappropriate hospital stays in selected in-patient services: a study of cases receiving social work services.

The number of discharges (63,303) from a university-affiliated medical center in Israel were reviewed. Eight percent of cases in three departments rcceivcd social work services. Patients experiencing inappropriate hospital stay (discharge delay) and who received social work services were characterized and compared with social work clients not experiencing delay.

Effect of endothelin-1 on alpha-smooth muscle actin expression and on alveolar fibroblasts proliferation in interstitial lung diseases.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent constrictor and mitogen peptide which is expressed in several pulmonary diseases. To elucidate the involvement of ET-1 in lung interstitial pathologic events, we assessed ET-1 secretion by alveolar macrophages (AM) and fibroblasts recovered from the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), sarcoidosis (SA) and from control subjects. We characterized in vitro alveolar fibroblasts of all subjects using monoclonal antibody specific to alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SM actin) and human fibroblast marker.

Secretion of stem cell factor by alveolar fibroblasts in interstitial lung diseases.

Sarcoidosis (SA) and diffuse interstitial fibrosis (DIF) are characterized by alveolitis, mast cell hyperplasia and increased fibroblast proliferation. Stem cell factor (SCF) stimulates proliferation of hematopoietic progenitor cells involved in mast and stromal cell interaction. We assessed the role of SCF secreted by alveolar fibroblasts (AFb) in the development of fibrosis of DIF and SA in six patients with SA and six patients with DIF.

Effect of IL-6 on alveolar fibroblast proliferation in interstitial lung diseases.

Alveolar macrophage-fibroblast interaction may be involved in the pathogenesis of interstitial lung diseases (ILD). Herein, we compared IL-6 secretion from alveolar macrophages (AM) and alveolar fibroblasts (AFb) recovered from patients with sarcoidosis (SA) and with diffuse interstitial fibrosis (DIF). Moreover, we evaluated the effect of IL-6 on the in vitro AFb proliferation in both diseases.
