Effect of serum on lymphocyte blastogenesis. I. Basic characteristics of action by diseased dog serum.

The immunoregulatory effect of serum on phytomitogen-induced lymphocyte blastogenesis was studied in 4 sera from diseased dogs and 1 serum from a clinically healthy dog. The results indicated that: (1) Each of the diseased animals responded to the given infection with a specific pattern of blastogenesis inhibition. (2) The blastogenesis suppression in vitro was proportional to the content of the suppressive serum in the medium.

Primary endoprosthetic replacement for acute femoral neck fractures. A review of 150 cases.

A review of 150 consecutive endoprosthetic replacements for acute displaced femoral neck fractures was undertaken to investigate the following serious criticisms of the method. The first is excessive hospital mortality and morbidity, especially in comparison to internal fixation procedures retaining the femoral head. The second is pain, derived from the "unphysiologic" nature of placing a metal prosthesis against otherwise normal acetabular cartilage.

Effects of age, temperature-season, and breed on blood characteristics of dairy cattle.

Two hundred twenty four dairy cattle (6 mo to second calving) representing four breeds (169 Holstein, 24 Guernsey, 19 Jersey, 12 Brown Swiss) were used to determine effects of age, temperature-season, and breed on blood characteristics. A total of 1183 blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture in the middle of each temperature-season. Covariate age affected blood profile except for hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, and albumin.

Retention of differentiated properties in an established dog kidney epithelial cell line (MDCK).

Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells grown in tissue culture have the morphological properties of distal tubular epithelial cells, form tight junctions, and lack several proximal tubular enzyme markers. Adenylate cyclase in these cells was stimulated by vasopressin, oxytocin, prostaglandins E1 and E2, glucagon, and cholera toxin. Hormone-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in isolated membrane preparations was dependent on low concentrations of GTP and had the MgCl2 and pH optima expected for the kidney enzyme.

Total artificial heart implantation in calves with pump on an angled port design.

The APP was employed in our 21st TAH calf and has now been implanted in a total of 11 animals. The APP has a dynamic stroke volume of 105 ml, an ejection fraction of 75%, and a peak flow of 14 L/min. The TAH features 2 APPs which have polysulfone cases and contain smooth, seam-free polyurethane sacs.

Osteotomy of the metatarsals for pes cavus.

Described is a surgical procedure for pes cavus which includes multiple osteotomies of the metatarsals, usually combined with Steindler fasciotomy and extensor tenotomy. This method permits the correction of the cavus deformity and preserves the length of the foot without disturbing any joint. A total of 11 patients with 14 procedures have been followed up for an average of more than three years.
