Mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue (AD-MSCs) have shown great potential in treating diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Natural radioactivity was measured in groundwater samples collected from 37 wells scattered in an inhabited area of high natural background radiation, in a purpose of radiation protection. The study area is adjacent to Aja heights of granitic composition in Hail province, Saudi Arabia. Initial screening for gross α and gross β activities showed levels exceeded the national regulation limits set out for gross α and gross β activities in drinking water.

Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SIP) is a rare benign tumor featuring increased cell proliferation, a tendency toward squamous differentiation, recurrence and malignant transformation. The CCAAT enhancer binding proteins, C/EBPs, are transcription factors regulating the proliferation and differentiation of various types of cells, including epithelial cells. We prospectively investigated the production of these transcription factors and the related proliferation and differentiation targets, keratin-10, keratin-15 and cyclin-D1, in 26 SIP patients and 8 sinonasal polyposis cases suspected for SIP.

A radiochemical technique for determination of plutonium isotopes and 241Am in soil samples is tested against IAEA-standard reference materials to determine its accuracy and precision for reliable results. The technique is then used in the investigation of topsoil samples, collected from the natural environment of the central region of Saudi Arabia, to assess the effect of fallout accumulation of these radionuclides in the region. Plutonium and americium were sequentially separated from all other components of the sample by anion-exchange chromatography and co-precipitated with Nd3+ as fluorides.

A thiobencarb dose of 3 mg L(-1) reduced the protein content of Anabaena variabilis, whereas it elevated the carbohydrate content. Measurements of Anabaena growth, photosynthetic activity, and respiration rate revealed that the high dose of phosphate (0.53 mM) exerted no additional toxic effect to thiobencarb toxicity.

The effect of pendimethalin on the green alga Protosiphon botryoides was investigated. Results indicate that specific growth rate, cell number, chlorophyll a level, and dry weight yield significantly decrease with increasing pendimethalin concentrations, while protein and carbohydrate contents increase significantly. On the other hand, photosynthetic activity decreases whereas dark respiration increases with high pendimethalin concentrations.

On studying the effect of simazine on Protosiphon botryoides and Anabaena variabilis, data revealed that chlorophyll a content and dry weight were decreased with the increase in simazine concentration. High concentration of simazine (0.8 mg L(-1)) reduced gross photosynthesis and carbohydrate content, whereas protein content and respiration rate were increased.

A preliminary study of 210Po concentrations in the blood of some smokers and nonsmokers is presented in order to evaluate the contribution of smoking to total blood 210Po in Saudi population. Blood samples were collected from 30 volunteers and analyzed by high resolution alpha-spectrometry using a radiochemical technique. The technique is based on the separation of polonium from other components of the sample by wet ashing with an HNO3/H2O2 oxidizing mixture and spontaneous deposition on a silver disc under the relevant conditions for alpha-particle counting.

The kinetic behaviour of Cl(-), Br(-) and SCN(-) exchanges on hydrous tin oxide have been investigated under conditions of particle diffusion and the limited bath technique. Values for the diffusion coefficients, energy of activation and entropy of activation have been calculated.
