Role of ureteral stenting after uncomplicated ureteroscopy for distal ureteral stones: a randomized, controlled trial.

Purpose: We determined the differences in outcome between ureteral stenting and nonstenting following uncomplicated ureteroscopy for distal ureteral stones.

Materials And Methods: A total of 220 patients treated with successful ureteroscopy for distal ureteral stones were randomized to 2 equal groups according to postoperative placement of a ureteral stent (Cook Ireland, National Technological Park, Ireland), including group 1--without a stent and group 2--with a stent. Outcome measures were flank pain and dysuria at 48 hours and 1 week, early postoperative complications, analgesia need, rehospitalization, return to normal physical activity, stone-free rate, stone recurrence and late postoperative complications.

The effect of elbow position on the range of supination and pronation of the forearm.

A kinematic study was performed to examine the influence of elbow position on the range of supination and pronation of the forearm. The ranges of supination and pronation were measured in 50 volunteers (25 men and 25 women) using a custom-designed jig which constrained unwanted and confounding movements of the limb. Measurements were taken with the elbow in full extension, 45 degrees flexion, 90 degrees flexion and full flexion.

Customised silicone prostheses for the reconstruction of chest wall defects: technique of manufacture and final outcome.

Chest wall reconstruction with a customised silicone prosthesis in 13 patients (five patients with pectus excavatum, six Poland's syndrome and two with post-surgical chest wall deformity) is presented. An alginate impression or CT scan with three-dimensional reconstruction was used to produce the final mould from which the silicone prosthesis was fabricated. A pulmonary artery false aneurysm after right middle lobectomy: a case report.

Pulmonary artery false aneurysm is a rare condition, reported to complicate interventional procedures. We report a case of a false aneurysm of the interlobar pulmonary artery following a right middle lobectomy for lung cancer. This is probably the first reported case.

Effects of proximal and distal ends of double-J ureteral stent position on postprocedural symptoms and quality of life: a randomized clinical trial.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the position of the proximal and distal ends of Double-J ureteral stents on postprocedural flank pain, lower urinary-tract symptoms, and quality of life.

Patients And Methods: The study included 120 patients who required unilateral Double-J ureteral stents for various indications. They were randomized into two equal groups.

Delayed presentation of an isolated gallbladder rupture following blunt abdominal trauma: a case report.

Background: Blunt injuries to the gallbladder occur rarely, and the incidence of isolated damage to the gallbladder is even smaller. We report a case of delayed presentation of isolated rupture of the gallbladder following blunt trauma to the abdomen.

A biomechanical study was performed on 12 cadaveric arms to define the normal profiles of force transmission through the ulna and radius and demonstrate the effect on these of simulated injury of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). Distal division of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) within 10mm of its insertion is commonly treated in the same manner as avulsion of the FDP, using the "button" technique or bone suture anchor fixation. Button and bone suture anchor fixation techniques have been associated with significant complications. Importantly, both lead to shortening of the FDP which may cause flexion contracture at the distal interphalangeal joint.

We reviewed the emergence of 13 cases of multi-resistant Acinetobacter infection in burns patients over a 12-month period. To examine the precise conformation of the annular and oblique pulleys of the thumb flexor sheath, anatomic dissections were undertaken on 14 hands. In all specimens a distinct pulley was found between the A1 and oblique pulleys. This is named the variable annular pulley or Av pulley.

Necrotising fasciitis in an infant with congenital insensitivity to pain syndrome.

We present a rare case of necrotising fasciitis in an infant with congenital insensitivity to pain syndrome. The aetiology, diagnosis and management of necrotising fasciitis in children are compared with those in adults. In contrast to adults, children affected by necrotising fasciitis are usually previously healthy and have no predisposing factors.
