Background: Sepsis, a deadly infection causing organ failure and Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), is detected early in hospitalization using the SIRS criteria, while sequential organ failure (SOFA) assesses organ failure severity. A systematic review and meta-analysis was evaluated to investigate the predictive value of the SIRS criteria and the SOFA system for mortality in early hospitalization of sepsis patients.

Methods: Inclusion criteria were full reports in peer-reviewed journals with data on sepsis assessment using SOFA and SIRS, and their relationship with outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Bag-Mask Ventilation (BMV) is essential for managing airways in emergencies, and the study compares three techniques: E/C, T/E, and a new 'hook technique' for effectiveness in single-person BMV execution.
  • A pilot study initially tested 63 medical staff on manikins, followed by a more extensive study involving 492 emergency patients divided into groups for each technique while monitoring end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) levels.
  • Results showed the hook technique had the highest successful ventilation rate at 93.3%, outperforming T/E (87.2%) and E/C (89.6%), indicating it could be a preferred method for effective airway management.

Background: Etomidate is an imidazole derivative that is widely used in the emergency department for Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI). Although it has a safe hemodynamic profile, there are some concerns about its suppressant effects on the adreno-cortical axis. Vitamin C, as an antioxidant, can play a protective role in this issue.

Background: Urinary stones are a common urologic problem that can be manifested as an intense pain, known as renal colic. Pain control is an important intervention for the emergency treatment of renal colic patients. Intranasal ketamine can form a crucial part of such interventions by offering a new route for a widely-used analgesic drug.

Ketamine-propofol combination (ketofol) is being used to provide a safe and effective procedural sedation (PS) in emergency department (ED) and may theoretically have beneficial effects since using lower doses of each drug may result in a reduction of the adverse events of both agents while maintaining optimal conditions for performing procedures. This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the efficacy, advantages and disadvantages of these two drugs for PS. The PRISMA statement was used for this systematic review.

Introduction: Acute chest pain is an important and frequently occurring symptom in patients. Chest pain is often a sign of ischemic heart disease. Associated findings of electrocardiograph (ECG) are rather heterogeneous, and traditional cardiac biomarkers such as Creatine Kinase-MB (CK-MB) suffer from low cardiac specificity and sensitivity.
