The role of meibomian gland dysfunction on the development of dry eye disease in patients with facial nerve palsy.

Purpose: To investigate whether meibomian gland dysfunction is the cause of dry eye in facial nerve palsy and to identify the possible relationship between the grades and durations of facial nerve palsy and meibomian gland dysfunction.

Methods: This prospective observational study included 63 patients with unilateral facial nerve palsy. Facial nerve function and severity were assessed using the House-Brackmann grading system.

The Effect of Uneventful Phacoemulsification on Intraocular Pressure and Anterior Segment Parameters in Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cataract surgery on anterior segment parameters and intraocular pressure (IOP) in non-glaucomatous pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) eyes.

Methods: The cohort consisted of 65 patients who were to undergo cataract surgery; the participants were divided into 2 groups: patients with PXS (n=35) and controls without PXS (n=30). A complete ophthalmic examination, measurement of IOP (using an applanation tonometer), and evaluation of anterior segment parameters using a Sirius Scheimpflug/Placido topography device (CSO Italy, Firenze, Italy) were performed on all patients both prior to and 1 month after surgery.

Impact of the type of anterior lamellar reconstruction on the success of modified Hughes procedure.

Purpose: To determine the long-term functional and cosmetic outcomes in patients who underwent modified Hughes procedure with different types of anterior lamellar reconstruction for lower eyelid defects.

Methods: This study included 58 patients who had undergone a modified Hughes flap for reconstruction of lower eyelids after tumor excision within a 10-year period. Data regarding patient demographics, size of eyelid defect, tumor pathology, surgical techniques, functional and cosmetic outcomes, and complications were recorded.

The effect of pseudoexfoliation syndrome on choroidal thickness in open-angle glaucoma.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of pseudoex foliation syndrome on choroidal thickness as compared with healthy individuals and subjects with primary open-angle glaucoma.

Methods: This prospective, randomized study included 30 primary open angle glaucoma patients and 30 pseudoexfoliation glaucoma patients with similar demographic characteristics and 30 eyes of 30 healthy individuals comprised the control group. Regular optic nerve and macular images were obtained using a Cirrus HD spectral domain optical coherence tomography instrument, along with macular choroidal thickness measurements with enhanced depth imaging mode.

Open Globe Injury: Demographic and Clinical Features.

Background: Open globe injuries (OGIs) are the main cause of visual impairment worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical features and the visual outcome of OGIs presented to the largest Teaching Hospital in Western part of Turkey.

Methods: The study included patients presented with OGI between Jan 2009 and Dec 2013.

Unusual intraconal localization of orbital giant cell angiofibroma.

Giant cell angiofibroma (GCA) is a recently reported rare soft-tissue tumor that can develop in various sites including orbit. Orbital GCAs were mainly located in the eyelid or extraconal regions such as lacrimal gland and conjunctiva. We report an atypical case of a GCA arising in the intraconal area of the orbit in a 65-year-old male patient.

Von Hippel-Lindau Disease: The Importance of Retinal Hemangioblastomas in Diagnosis.

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a familial cancer syndrome characterized by benign or malignant tumors which may involve more than one system. Retinal hemangioblastomas are usually the initial manifestation of VHL disease and can cause vision loss. A 32-year-old man presented to our clinic with vision loss in the left eye for 2 months.

Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with iron deficiency anemia.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) on peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness with optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Materials And Methods: 102 female patients who had IDA (hemoglobin <12 g/dl, serum transferrin saturation <15%, serum iron <50 μg/dl, and serum ferritin <15 μg/dl) were enrolled in the study. Optic disc and RNFL parameters obtained by Cirrus high-definition OCT 4000 were compared with those of 49 age and sex-matched nonanemic individuals.

Orbital Apex Syndrome Secondary to Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus.

A 49-year-old woman who complained of lacrimation, foreign body sensation, and eyelid oedema presented to our outpatient clinic. External examination identified erythematous rash with vesicles on the left eyelid, dorsum of the nose, and forehead of the patient. She was diagnosed to have herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), and was started on oral brivudine and topical acyclovir.

Ocular findings in breast cancer patients using tamoxifen.

Aim: To examine ocular findings of breast cancer patients using tamoxifen.

Methods: The records of 79 consecutive breast cancer patients were examined, retrospectively. Female patients who had previously been diagnosed to have breast cancer with either stage I, II, or III disease, and were older than 25 years of age were included in the study.

Primary basal cell carcinoma of the caruncle: case report and review of the literature.

A case of primary basal cell carcinoma of the caruncle is presented and patients presented in the literature reviewed. Clinical features and outcome of a patient with primary basal cell carcinoma of the caruncle is described. Review of 8 other cases identified through literature search with the keywords of "basal cell carcinoma" and "caruncle" is presented.

Analysis of risk factors for consecutive exotropia and review of the literature.

Purpose: To evaluate the possible risk factors in patients with consecutive exotropia following esotropia surgery.

Methods: Medical records of patients who had comitant esotropia surgery between June 1999 and April 2011 were reviewed. Those who developed consecutive exotropia composed the exotropia group; patients matched for age and duration of follow-up who did not develop consecutive exotropia composed the no exotropia group.

Surgical management of chronic complete sixth nerve palsy.

Background And Objective: to evaluate the results of strabismus surgery in patients with chronic complete sixth nerve palsy.

Patients And Methods: the patients with negative traction test underwent full tendon vertical rectus muscle transposition, whereas the patients with positive traction test had medial rectus recession and transposition surgery. Traction sutures were used in patients with deviations greater than 65 prism diopters (PD) in addition to medial rectus recession.

Surgical treatment in patients with double elevator palsy.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of surgical treatment performed in patients with double elevator palsy (DEP).

Methods: Patients diagnosed with congenital DEP between April 2003 and March 2007 were included in the study. The cases with positive traction test had inferior rectus (IR) recession followed by full tendon width muscle transposition Knapp surgery or partial tendon width transposition operation, while those without positive traction test underwent transposition procedure alone.

Strabismus in Down syndrome.

Purpose: To determine the distribution of refractive errors and clinical characteristics of strabismus in patients with Down syndrome.

Patients And Methods: Patients with Down syndrome attending the Izmir Association for Supporting Patients With Down Syndrome in Izmir, Turkey, were screened for strabismus and refractive errors. All patients underwent a complete eye examination including cycloplegic refraction and dilated fundus examination.

Coccidioidomycosis of the eyelid.

A 77-year-old woman presented with an ulcerated nodule on her right lower eyelid that was unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotics or incision and drainage. Coccidioidomycosis was suspected because of previous serologic testing and concurrent indurated cutaneous nodules. Although skin biopsies were not diagnostic, cultures from the eyelid were positive for Coccidioides immitis.

Evolution of an orbital apex tumor over a decade.

We report the evolution of an orbital apex tumor that underwent spontaneous regression, followed several years later by rapid growth and loss of vision. A turkey farmer had a right apical lesion, initially thought to be an optic nerve meningioma. The mass spontaneously regressed over 2 years, with marked improvement of vision.

Traumatic subconjunctival crystalline lens dislocation.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical features and visual outcomes in patients with traumatic subconjunctival crystalline lens dislocation.

Setting: Izmir Atatürk Education and Research Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Izmir, Turkey.

Methods: The clinical records of 5 patients with subconjunctival crystalline lens dislocation secondary to blunt trauma were reviewed.
