Aspergillus and Candida are ubiquitous fungi included in the group of high priority in the World Health Organization list of fungal pathogens. They are found in various ecosystems and the environmental role in increasing the resistance to antifungals has been shown. Thus, we aimed to determine the occurrence of Aspergillus spp.

Compositional Design of New Environmentally Friendly Geopolymer Mortar Based on Kaolin and Granite Residues.

The use of industrial residues in civil construction is an exciting alternative to mitigate environmental impacts and promote the circular economy. This work developed new compositions of geopolymer mortars activated by NaOH from fine kaolin residue (RCF), coarse kaolin residue (RCG) and granite (RG). All residues were benefited and characterized by chemical analysis (X-ray fluorescence), mineralogical phases (X-ray diffraction) and granulometry (laser granulometry).

Aspergillus fumigatus sensu stricto genetic diversity from cystic fibrosis patients.

We aimed to access the genetic diversity of Apergillus fumigatus strains obtained from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients from southern Brazil. A. fumigatus sensu stricto isolates from respiratory clinical specimens were genotyped by microsatellite markers and azole resistance was evaluated by azole-agar screening.

Septic arthritis caused by following arthroscopic surgery.

A 37-year-old immunocompetent man was admitted to the emergency department due to recurrent pain and oedema of his right knee. Two months earlier, he had undergone surgery to repair his meniscus. Arthroscopic joint lavage was performed and was recovered in culture.

A case of pleural lipoma evaluated with multi-imaging methods.

We reported a rare case of patient affected by pleural lipoma, studied with ultrasound, X-rays, CT, and MRI examination, with both conventional and functional MR imaging modality (DWI), in order to highlight the diagnostic contribution of the DWI sequence. It is necessary to make an adequate evaluation with dedicated imaging to make a correct differential diagnosis from the corresponding malignant forms which would require more radical treatment. In this case we evaluated the effectiveness of the DWI sequence in reaching the correct diagnosis.

Assessment of risk factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease.

Objective: To assess the risk factors for interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to evaluate the association of ILD with the use of methotrexate as well as with joint disease activity.

Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study conducted between March and December 2019 at a tertiary healthcare center, in a follow-up of RA patients who had undergone pulmonary function tests (PFT) and chest computed tomography. We evaluated the tomographic characteristics, such as the presence of ILD and its extension, as well as joint disease activity.

Update of the Epidemiology of the Sporotrichosis Epidemic in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Background: Sporotrichosis is a disease not requiring jurisdictional notification and consequently is underreported in Brazil. Therefore, the epidemiological picture even in hyperendemic states is unknown. Thus, we evaluated the occurrence of sporotrichosis throughout the territory of the southern state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul (RS).

Tattooing as a gateway to infection.

Recently, sporotrichosis caused by transmitted during tattooing process was described in the epicenter of the Brazilian epidemic sporotrichosis. We report a similar case of this mycosis in a patient recently tattooed, but probably infected by a sick cat instead of via a contaminated procedure. Clinical cure was attained after two months of oral itraconazole.

Fungal Bloodstream Co-infection by Trichosporon asahii in a COVID-19 Critical Patient: Case Report and Literature Review.

Opportunistic infections are serious complications in critically ill COVID-19 patients, especially co-infections with bacterial and fungal agents. Here we report a rare case of bloodstream co-infection by Trichosporon asahii, an emerging yeast, and Acinetobacterbaumannii, an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen, both multidrug resistant, in a tertiary hospital from southern Brazil. A review of the literature regarding similar cases is also included.

A Phase III Study of Bumetanide Oral Liquid Formulation for the Treatment of Children and Adolescents Aged Between 7 and 17 Years with Autism Spectrum Disorder (SIGN 1 Trial): Participant Baseline Characteristics.

The efficacy of bumetanide (oral liquid formulation 0.5 mg bid) as a treatment for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders in children and adolescents aged 7-17 years is being investigated in an international, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III study. The primary endpoint is the change in Childhood Autism Rating Scale 2 (CARS2) total raw score after 6 months of treatment.

Aggressive Diffuse Intraosseous Hemangioma: Case Report.

Vertebral hemangioma is a benign vascular tumor that is usually asymptomatic and is discovered incidentally on imaging. When symptomatic, the most frequent presentation occurs in the form of vague back pain of insidious onset and, in rare cases, may be associated with root or spinal compression, causing sensory and motor deficits. The authors report the case of a 33-year-old man, previously healthy, with a diagnosis of thoracic spine hemangioma at multiple levels, in the sternum, in the scapula and in the costal arches; all lesions were symptomatic, and surgical intervention was required; one of the lesions at the thoracic spine level evolved with spinal compression and acute neurological deficit, requiring urgent surgical intervention.

Cryptococcosis in HIV-AIDS patients from Southern Brazil: Still a major problem.

Introduction: Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic pathogen that causes ∼15% mortality in AIDS patients. Rio Grande City, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, has the highest national rate of HIV/AIDS, considering cities with population more than 100,000 habitants.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological profile of cryptococcosis in a reference service for HIV-AIDS patients in the South region of Brazil, over seven years.

Simultaneous Integrated Boost Radiotherapy in Unresectable Stage IV (M0) Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer Patients: Daily Clinical Practice.

Aim: To evaluate clinical outcome in locally-advanced stage IV (M0) head and neck cancer patients treated using intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) in daily clinical practice.

Objective: This article concerns the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and apparent validation of the Trauma and Attachment Belief Scale (TABS), an instrument used to assess the psychological effects of traumatic life experiences and vicarious trauma.

Methods: This study involved literature review and evaluation of conceptual and item equivalences involving expert discussion groups focused on the existence and pertinence of the underlying theoretical concepts and corresponding items in a Brazilian context. Two translations and respective back-translations were performed during the evaluation of semantic equivalence, as well as an evaluation considering the referential and general equivalences between the original TABS and each version.

Comparison Between Etest and Broth Microdilution Methods for Testing Itraconazole-Resistant Aspergillus fumigatus Susceptibility to Antifungal Combinations.

The checkerboard broth microdilution assay (BMD) is the most frequently used method for the in vitro evaluation of drug combinations. However, its use to evaluate the effect of antifungal drugs on filamentous fungi is sometimes associated with endpoint-reading difficulties, and different degrees of interaction are assigned to the same drug combination. Nocardia nova causing empyema necessitatis afterlung re-transplantation: a case report.

We report herein a case of thoracic infection due to Nocardia nova following lung re-transplantation performed for emphysema related to alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. The infection extended from the lung into the pleural space, thoracic wall, and mediastinum, presenting as pericarditis and empyema necessitatis. Nocardia nova was identified by 16S ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid (rDNA) sequencing and phylogenetic analysis.
