Since the safety of new-generation polyester-based internal coatings regarding the migration of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) is poorly documented, studies are needed to identify NIAS originating from these food-contact materials (FCM). The aim of this study was to identify volatile and semi-volatile NIAS from polyester-based coatings in order to assess their hazard and ensure consumers' safety with regard to exposure from canned food. Extraction and migration tests were carried out on a single polyester-coated tin plate (5 batches) using two solvents: acetonitrile and ethanol 95%, then FCM's extracts and migrates were analysed by GC-MS.

Article Synopsis
  • Food contact paperboard, especially recycled ones, might contaminate food with chemicals, both added and unintentional.
  • A study analyzed paperboard samples at different stages of recycling, finding that most harmful chemicals were reduced post-recycling, though some trace elements like chlorine remained.
  • The study also noted that while the original paperboard had chemicals causing potential hormonal disruptions, these effects were significantly diminished in the recycled paperboard.

Background: Ribociclib has been shown to have a significant overall survival benefit in patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative advanced breast cancer. Whether this benefit in advanced breast cancer extends to early breast cancer is unclear.

Methods: In this international, open-label, randomized, phase 3 trial, we randomly assigned patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer in a 1:1 ratio to receive ribociclib (at a dose of 400 mg per day for 3 weeks, followed by 1 week off, for 3 years) plus a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor (NSAI; letrozole at a dose of 2.

With a view to identifying main endocrine disruptors (ED) mixtures to which French consumers are exposed through food, their main diets were modelled using an adapted dimension reduction method. Seven specific diets could be modelled for adults while only one overall diet was considered for children aged 3-17 years. The knowledge of the contamination levels of 78 known or suspected endocrine disrupting compounds in the foods constituting these diets, collected in the frame of the second French Total Diet Study, made it possible to explore the mixtures of EDs to which consumers are exposed.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are present in many daily life products with particular physical-chemical properties (size, density, porosity, geometry …) giving very interesting technological properties. Their use is continuously growing and NPs represent a new challenge in terms of risk assessment, consumers being multi-exposed. Toxic effects have already been identified such as oxidative stress, genotoxicity, inflammatory effects, and immune reactions, some of which are leading to carcinogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • TEHTM is a type of plasticizer used in medical devices instead of a harmful chemical called DEHP.
  • Scientists studied how TEHTM breaks down in the body and how these breakdown products affect hormones like estrogen and testosterone.
  • They found that only some of the breakdown products have effects on hormones, but the levels in human urine suggest these won't cause problems in real life.

Plasticizers added to polyvinylchloride (PVC) used in medical devices can be released into patients' biological fluids. Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), a well-known reprotoxic and endocrine disruptor, must be replaced by alternative compounds. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT) is an interesting candidate due to its lower migration from PVC and its lack of reprotoxicity.

Hummus, an iron-containing plant-based dish mainly made from chickpea purée, tahini, lemon juice and garlic, could be a valuable source of iron when bioavailable. Since the processing and formulation of food influence iron bioavailability, the present study investigated for the first time, their effects on hummus. Firstly, iron bioaccessibility was assessed on eight samples (prepared according to the screening Hadamard matrix) by in vitro digestion preceding iron dialysis.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were developed as positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) bimodal imaging agents. These nanoparticles (NPs), with a specific nanoflower morphology, were first synthesized and simultaneously functionalized with 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (LDOPA) under continuous hydrothermal conditions. The resulting NPs exhibited a low hydrodynamic size of 90 ± 2 nm.

Plasticizers added to polyvinylchloride used in medical devices can be released into patients' biological fluids. The substitution of di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) by alternative plasticizers is essential but their safety must be demonstrated. DEHP, di-(2-ethylhexyl)terephthalate (DEHT) and their metabolites were investigated using level 2 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development bioassays to screen for in vitro hormonal changes.

Background: Altered proteome profiles have been reported in both postmortem brain tissues and body fluids of subjects with Alzheimer disease (AD), but their broad relationships with AD pathology, amyloid pathology, and tau-related neurodegeneration have not yet been fully explored. Using a robust automated MS-based proteomic biomarker discovery workflow, we measured cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomes to explore their association with well-established markers of core AD pathology.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis was performed on CSF collected from 120 older community-dwelling adults with normal (n = 48) or impaired cognition (n = 72).

In this work, we discuss for the first time the elaboration of nanohybrid materials, intended for drug delivery systems, based on titanate nanotubes (TiONts) coated with chitosan polymer (CT). Chitosan has been used to enhance the biocompatibility of hydrothermally synthesized nanotubes in biological medium as a substitute for the polyethylene glycol (PEG) that is generally used for biocompatibility. CT grafting was carried out using two different approaches; the first was made by a covalent bond using two intermediate molecules, and the second is based on electrostatic interactions between CT and TiONts.

Food contact paperboards may be a potential source of food contamination as they can release chemicals (intentionally added or not), especially recycled paperboards. This study assessed the in vitro genotoxicity of food contact paperboard samples from a manufacturer, collected at the beginning and at the end of a recycling production chain. Samples were extracted in water to mimic a wet food contact.

This review focuses on the use of in vitro bioassays for the hazard assessment of food contact materials (FCM) as a relevant strategy, in complement to analytical methods. FCM may transfer constituents to foods, not always detected by analytical chemistry, resulting in low but measurable human exposures. Testing FCM extracts with bioassays represents the biological response of a combination of substances, able to be released from the finished materials.

Background: In vitro and animal studies have linked neuroinflammation to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Studies on markers of inflammation in subjects with mild cognitive impairment or AD dementia provided inconsistent results. We hypothesized that distinct blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory markers are associated with biomarkers of amyloid and tau pathology in older adults without cognitive impairment or with beginning cognitive decline.

The genetic capacity to fix gaseous nitrogen (N) is distributed among diverse diazotrophs belonging to the Bacteria and Archaea. However, only a subset of the putative diazotrophs present actively fix N at any given time in the environment. We experimentally tested whether the availability of carbon and inhibition by oxygen constrain N fixation by diazotrophs in coastal seawater.
