Testicular torsion (TT) is a urological condition that can result in infertility in men. The etiopathogenesis of TT includes ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) characterized by oxidative stress (OS), inflammation and apoptosis resulting from increased levels of free radicals. Usnic acid (UA), a dibenzofuran, is one of the most common metabolites found in lichens and is known to possess powerful antioxidant properties.

Article Synopsis
  • Microsatellite instability (MSI) is linked to DNA repair gene errors and colorectal cancer (CRC), with debated impacts on prognosis and prevalence in sporadic cases.
  • A retrospective analysis of 101 CRC cases assessed various clinicopathologic features, including tumor characteristics and patient demographics, to understand the relationship between MSI and survival outcomes.
  • The study found no significant differences in survival based on MSI status, but noted that MSI-H tumors were more common in the right and transverse colon, while age and nodal/metastatic staging were independent factors affecting prognosis.

Reproductive toxicity is a serious side effect of cisplatin (CP) chemotherapy. Gentisic acid (GTA) is a phenolic acid with strong antioxidant properties. Here, we aimed to determine therapeutic effect of GTA against CP-induced testicular toxicity in rats for the first time.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in the differentiation of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtypes.

Methods: This is a retrospective diagnostic performance study, in which the diagnostic performances of mpMRI features were evaluated to differentiate clear cell RCC (ccRCC) from non-clear cell RCC (non-ccRCC). Adult patients who were evaluated using a 3-Tesla dynamic contrast-enhanced mpMRI before undergoing partial or radical nephrectomy for possible malignant renal tumors were included in the study.

Background: Invasive solid papillary carcinomas (ISPC) are rare malignant neoplasms in the classification of WHO 2019 breast tumors.

Aims: We aimed to investigate the correlations between programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression status of tumor and immune cells and clinicopathological parameters by molecular classification of this rare morphological subtype. This study will contribute to the literature about the PD-L1 expression state of ISPCs for the first time.

Primary mesotheliomas of the tunica vaginalis testis are very rare malignant tumors. They are generally associated with exposure to asbestos. They may manifest as hydrocele, testis tumor, inguinal hernia, or epididymitis.

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of vascular indices obtained using 3D power Doppler ultrasound (3D PDUS) in differentiation of benign and malignant thyroid nodules.

Materials And Methods: Sixty-seven patients (56 female, 11 male, mean age 44.6) with 81 thyroid nodules exhibiting mixed (peripheral and central) vascularization patterns, with the largest diameter between 10 and 30 mm, were prospectively evaluated using 3D PDUS.

Systemic amyloidosis is a clinical manifestation of the accumulation of amyloid fibrils in tissues because of persistent acute phase elevation and chronic inflammation. Its most common causes are inflammatory diseases and malignancies. Here, we present a 12-year-old girl diagnosed with systemic amyloidosis and Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) who was also previously diagnosed with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).

Background/aim: L-theanine is the unique amino acid found in tea plants, has antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities, and functions in mental concentration and sleep quality. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effects of L-theanine on doxorubicin (DOX, a chemotherapeutic agent) induced nephrotoxicity in rats, especially via GSH related enzymes.

Materials And Methods: 32 male Sprague Dawley rats weighing 300-400 g were randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 8) and the substances were given intraperitoneally to them: Control group (saline for 5 days); Theanine group (200 mg/kg/day theanine for 5 days); DOX group (single dose of 20 mg/kg DOX); DOX + Theanine group (20 mg/kg DOX at first day and 200 mg/kg/day theanine for 5 days).

Purpose: To investigate the possible relationship between the nuclear morphometric characteristics (nuclear perimeter, roundness, nuclear area, and nuclear shape) and BRAF mutation status in papillary thyroid carcinoma cases with a prior diagnosis of undetermined cytology.

Materials And Methods: Total thyroidectomy specimens obtained from 48 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma with a prior diagnosis of undetermined cytology were included. Morphometric analysis under light microscopy included measurements of the perimeter, shape factor, nuclear area, and roundness of thyrocyte nuclei from the cytological smear preparations.

We present an extremely rare case of a pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma of the true vocal fold. The histopathological diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The patient was treated with radical surgery including total laryngectomy and radical neck dissection followed by postoperative radiotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the effects of melatonin and genistein on kidney damage caused by radiation therapy in 70 Swiss Albino mice, divided into seven groups for treatment.
  • Mice were either subjected to sham irradiation, radiation only, or treated with melatonin or genistein separately, or in combination with radiation, followed by evaluations of kidney health.
  • Results showed that both melatonin and genistein significantly reduced kidney damage and harmful substance levels compared to radiation alone, indicating potential protective effects against radiation-induced nephrotoxicity.
