Reconstruction of extrahepatic bile ducts is a staple procedure of HPB surgery. The current standard for most cases is a nonanatomical bilioenteric reconstruction, a satisfactory option for the majority of patients. However, it cannot be used for a small number of selective cases (short bowel syndrome, severe abdominal adhesions), where an anatomical reconstruction with or without an interponate can be used.

Recently, in the past decade, high-frequency oscillations (HFOs), very high-frequency oscillations (VHFOs), and ultra-fast oscillations (UFOs) were reported in epileptic patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, to this day, the physiological origin of these events has yet to be understood. Our study establishes a mathematical framework based on bifurcation theory for investigating the occurrence of VHFOs and UFOs in depth EEG signals of patients with focal epilepsy, focusing on the potential role of reduced connection strength between neurons in an epileptic focus.

Giant Response and Selectivity of Hansen Solubility Parameters-Based Graphene-SBS Co-Polymer Matrix Composite Room Temperature Sensor to Organic Vapours.

A styrene-butadiene-styrene co-polymer matrix nanocomposite filled with graphene nanoplatelets was studied to prepare chemiresistive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) room temperature sensors with considerable response and selectivity. Nanofiller concentration was estimated from the electrical conductivity percolation behaviour of the nanocomposite. Fabricated sensors provided selective relative responses to representative VOCs differing by orders of magnitude.

Electrochemical HPLC Determination of Piperazine Antihistamine Drugs Employing a Spark-Generated Nickel Oxide Nanoparticle-Modified Carbon Fiber Microelectrode.

In this work, we demonstrate a sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of piperazine antihistamine drugs employing innovative electrochemical detection based on a spark-generated nickel oxide nanoparticle-modified carbon fiber microelectrode built into a miniaturized electrochemical detector. The direct carbon fiber-to-nickel plate electrode spark discharge, carried at 0.8 kV DC, with the nickel electrode connected to the negative pole of the high-voltage power supply, provides extremely fast (1 s) in situ tailoring of the carbon fiber microelectrode surface by nickel oxide nanoparticles.

Ambrosia gall midges are endophagous insect herbivores whose larvae live enclosed within a single gall for their entire development period. They may exhibit phytomycetophagy, a remarkable feeding mode that involves the consumption of plant biomass and mycelia of their cultivated gall symbionts. Thus, AGMs are ideal model organisms for studying the role of microorganisms in the evolution of host specificity in insects.

Predicting the CD34 content of mobilized peripheral blood leukapheresis products: single institution experience over 20 years.

Background Aims: Since the standardization of CD34 measurement by flow cytometry, predictors of leukapheresis CD34 yield have played a pivotal role in planning donor leukaphereses. We describe here a single institution's experience with a multivariate predictor that was used for 2,929 products without alteration for 20 years.

Methods: The ordinary least squares regression model variables included log peripheral CD34 count, collection duration (3- versus 4-hours), collection number, donor sex, and transplant type.

Controlled Drug Delivery Device for Cornea Treatment and Novel Method for Its Testing.

A new solution for local anesthetic and antibiotic delivery after eye surgery is presented. A contact lens-shaped collagen drug carrier was created and loaded by Levofloxacin and Tetracaine with a riboflavin crosslinked surface layer, thus impeding diffusion. The crosslinking was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, whereas the drug release was investigated using UV-Vis spectrometry.

A New Heart-Cutting Method for a Multiplex Quantitative Analysis of Steroid Hormones in Plasma Using 2D-LC/MS/MS Technique.

The aim of the current research was to develop a simple and rapid mass spectrometry-based assay for the determination of 15 steroid hormones in human plasma in a single run, which would be suitable for a routine practice setting. For this purpose, we designed a procedure based on the 2D-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with a minimalistic sample pre-treatment. In our arrangement, the preparation of one sample takes only 10 min and can accommodate 40 samples per hour when tested in series.

Permanent intravenous access in experimental surgery – our experience.

Introduction: Permanent intravenous access is usually required in pigs used for surgical experiments, not only to enable repeated blood sample collections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the patency and complications of vascular access ports (VAP) implanted in pigs included in different surgical experiments. Methods: VAPs were implanted via the external jugular vein in a total of 211 pigs from 7 different experiments.

How do we operate a large monthly red blood cell exchange program.

Background: Red blood cell (RBC) exchange for sickle cell disease presents unique difficulties due to RBC phenotyping, complex antibody work-ups, large number of RBC units required, and vascular access considerations, any of which can delay the procedure. Multidisciplinary coordination and systemic processes ensure that monthly appointments remain on schedule.

Study Design And Methods: A high-volume chronic RBC exchange program is described, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary coordination and process improvement strategies involving initial referral, vascular access, order sets, and allocation of antigen-negative or phenotypically matched RBCs.
