However, derivatives of deoxycholic acid (DCA) and lithocholic acid (LCA) produced via bacterial metabolism may mitigate the proinflammatory and cytotoxic effects of hydrophobic bile acids. The impact of diet on secondary bile acid (BA) derivative production has not been determined.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer and second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Recent evidence has linked a high fat and animal protein diet and microbial metabolism of host bile acids as environmental risk factors for CRC development. We hypothesize that the primary bile salt taurocholic acid (TCA) is a key, diet-controlled metabolite whose use by bacteria yields a carcinogen and tumor-promoter, respectively.

Diet quality may be a unique target for preventing and managing obesity-related osteoarthritis (OA). Using the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010), this study examined the nutrient intake and diet quality of 400 urban overweight and obese primarily African American older adults with self-reported lower extremity OA. Associations between sociodemographic and health-related factors and diet quality were explored.
