Background: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have an increased risk of thrombotic events. Platelets become more active and they enlarge to release proteins from alpha granules for aggregation during the plaque formation period. Beta-thromboglobulin is one of the proteins released from alpha-granules when platelets are activated and used as a marker of platelet activation in vivo.

Methods: The PsA registry of Turkey is a multicentre Web-based registry established in 2014 and including 32 rheumatology centres. Detailed data regarding demographics for skin and joint disease, disease activity assessments and treatment choices were collected.
The activation of the platelets plays a key role in the formation of thrombosis. The variables such as mean platelet volume, platelet factor 4 and β-thromboglobulin have been used in the demonstration of the platelet activation. However, when the literature was reviewed, there was not found any study investigating the level of β-thromboglobulin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
