Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal type of primary brain tumor, necessitating the discovery of reliable serum prognostic biomarkers. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of serum Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in GBM patients. Bioinformatics analysis via gene set enrichment analysis was conducted on The Cancer Genome Atlas RNA-seq data to explore the pathways enriched in samples with high expression.

Non-linear association between liver fibrosis scores and viral load in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Background/aims: Serum hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA levels and non-invasive liver fibrosis scores are significantly associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Nonetheless, the relationship between HBV DNA levels and liver fibrosis scores is unclear.

Methods: A historical cohort comprising 6,949 non-cirrhotic Korean CHB patients without significant alanine aminotransferase elevation was investigated.

Enhancing the Evaluation System of Training Hospitals for Neurosurgical Residency Training and Education in South Korea : Striving for Balanced Participation and Differentiation.

The Korean Neurosurgical Society, with its 62 years of history, has witnessed substantial growth in the field of neurosurgery, producing over 3400 neurosurgeons, establishing 12 divisions and nine regional branches, and advancing in clinical management, diagnostic methods and academic research. Despite these developments, the regulations governing neurosurgical training and evaluation methods for training hospitals have remained largely unchanged, necessitating comprehensive revisions in response to evolving medical environments. To provide balanced participation opportunities for neurosurgery residents, the Korean Neurosurgical Society formed the Training Status Investigation Standard Change Task Force (TF team) under the Training Education Committee.

Gender Differences in the Protective Role of Grandparenting in Dementia Risk.

Objectives: This study provides one of the first national longitudinal studies of the association between caring for grandchildren (i.e., grandparenting) and the risk of dementia in the United States, with a focus on gender-specific variations.

Background: The prognostic roles of clinical and laboratory markers have been exploited to model risk in patients with primary CNS lymphoma, but these approaches do not fully explain the observed variation in outcome. To date, neuroimaging or molecular information is not used. The aim of this study was to determine the utility of radiomic features to capture clinically relevant phenotypes, and to link those to molecular profiles for enhanced risk stratification.

Neighborhood Features and Cognitive Function: Moderating Roles of Individual Socioeconomic Status.

Introduction: There is an interest in exploring the associations between neighborhood characteristics and individual cognitive function; however, little is known about whether these relationships can be modified by individual socioeconomic status, such as educational attainment and income.

Methods: Drawing from the 2010-2018 Health and Retirement Study, this study analyzed 10,621 older respondents (aged 65+) with a total of 33,931 person-waves. These respondents did not have dementia in 2010 and stayed in the same neighborhood throughout the study period.

A multicenter, phase II trial of GC1118, a novel anti-EGFR antibody, for recurrent glioblastoma patients with EGFR amplification.

Background: We evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of GC1118, a novel anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) monoclonal antibody, in recurrent glioblastoma (GBM) patients with EGFR amplification.

Methods: This study was a multicenter, open-label, single-arm phase II trial. Recurrent GBM patients with EGFR amplification were eligible: EGFR amplification was determined using fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis when a sample had both the EGFR/CEP7 ratio of ≥2 and a tight cluster EGFR signal in ≥10% of recorded cells.

An agonistic anti-Tie2 antibody suppresses the normal-to-tumor vascular transition in the glioblastoma invasion zone.

Tumor progression is intimately associated with the vasculature, as tumor proliferation induces angiogenesis and tumor cells metastasize to distant organs via blood vessels. However, whether tumor invasion is associated with blood vessels remains unknown. As glioblastoma (GBM) is featured by aggressive invasion and vascular abnormalities, we characterized the onset of vascular remodeling in the diffuse tumor infiltrating zone by establishing new spontaneous GBM models with robust invasion capacity.

Rotational Vertebral Artery Syndrome (Bow Hunter's Syndrome): A Rare Differential Diagnosis in Patients With Syncope.

Syncope is a common symptom in clinical practice. Rotational vertebral artery occlusion syndrome, also referred to as Bow Hunter's syndrome (BHS), is a rare condition associated with syncope and is caused by mechanical occlusion or stenosis secondary to mechanical compression of the vertebral artery during head rotation. BHS is associated with a multifactorial etiology; however, in most cases, this condition is attributed to degenerative changes.

Oxicam-type nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs enhance -mediated transient transformation in plants.

-mediated transformation is a key innovation for plant breeding, and routinely used in basic researches and applied biology. However, the transformation efficiency is often the limiting factor of this technique. In this study, we discovered that oxicam-type nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including tenoxicam (TNX), increase the efficiency of -mediated transient transformation.

Multiscale dimensions of county-level disparities in opioid use disorder rates among older Medicare beneficiaries.

Background: Opioid use disorder (OUD) among older adults (age ≥ 65) is a growing yet underexplored public health concern and previous research has mainly assumed that the spatial process underlying geographic patterns of population health outcomes is constant across space. This study is among the first to apply a local modeling perspective to examine the geographic disparity in county-level OUD rates among older Medicare beneficiaries and the spatial non-stationarity in the relationships between determinants and OUD rates.

Methods: Data are from a variety of national sources including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services beneficiary-level data from 2020 aggregated to the county-level and county-equivalents, and the 2016-2020 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates for 3,108 contiguous US counties.

Objectives: Poor sleep is common among older adults with chronic health conditions and their spousal caregivers. However, dyadic sleep patterns among spouses are underexplored within the literature. This study examines dyadic sleep characteristics and associated contextual factors among spousal care dyads.

Treatment results of anterior choroidal artery aneurysms treated mostly with coil embolization: A single-center experience.

Background: Anterior choroidal artery (AchA) aneurysms are usually small in diameter because of the size of the involved artery and are often wide-necked. Coil embolization of AchA aneurysm is thus challenging because of serious risks, such as thromboembolic occlusion of artery and perforation of aneurysm dome. Therefore, aneurysmal neck clipping remains widely performed despite a recent increase in the use of coil embolization for aneurysm treatment.

A Huge Radiation-Induced Cavernous Hemangioma Following Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Meningioma: A Case Report.

Radiation-induced cavernous hemangiomas (RICHs) have been increasingly reported as a late complication after conventional radiotherapy. RICH after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is extremely rare and the few cases have been reported to demonstrate their properties. A 72-year-old female patient presented with progressive neurologic deficits.

A Deep Neural Network-Based Model Predicting Peritumoral Edema After Radiosurgery for Meningioma.

Background: Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKS) is a promising treatment option for meningioma. However, the incidence of peritumoral edema (PTE) following GKS has been reported to be 7%-38%. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for post-GKS PTE using a deep neural network (DNN) algorithm.

Reverse Trans-Sellar Neuroendoscopic Management of a Large Rathke's Cleft Cyst Causing Obstructive Hydrocephalus: A Case Report.

Symptomatic Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) can be treated by surgical procedures, usually through an endonasal transsphenoidal corridor using either a microscope or an endoscope. We report a large suprasellar extended RCC causing obstructive hydrocephalus, which was efficiently managed by a novel surgical route named "reverse" trans-sellar approach using transventricular neuroendoscopy. A 48-year-old woman complained of persistent headache and a tendency to fall that had begun 6 months previously.

Oxicam-type non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit NPR1-mediated salicylic acid pathway.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including salicylic acid (SA), target mammalian cyclooxygenases. In plants, SA is a defense hormone that regulates NON-EXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS RELATED GENES 1 (NPR1), the master transcriptional regulator of immunity-related genes. We identify that the oxicam-type NSAIDs tenoxicam (TNX), meloxicam, and piroxicam, but not other types of NSAIDs, exhibit an inhibitory effect on immunity to bacteria and SA-dependent plant immune response.

A flare of Still's disease following COVID-19 vaccination in a 34-year-old patient.

Vaccination is a cornerstone for reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection during a pandemic. Although the currently used COVID-19 vaccine is considered safe, some concerns persist regarding the likelihood of flares of rheumatic diseases. Still's disease is a rare auto-inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, and the data on the flare of Still's disease following COVID-19 vaccination are limited.
