Background: Taxanes are effective chemotherapy drugs for breast cancer care, but adverse effects pose a significant challenge in cancer treatment. Taxane-induced fluid retention and lower-extremity edema are two of the important dose-limiting toxicity and result in decreased quality of life (QoL). However, there is no standard of care to alleviate the symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates the effectiveness of axillary ultrasound (AUS) in detecting lymph node metastasis in patients with clinically T1-2 N0 breast cancer who had negative AUS results prior to sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB).
  • - Out of 948 patients analyzed, the false negative rate of AUS was roughly 20%, while the rates of high nodal burden (HNB) were quite low at around 1-2%.
  • - The findings indicate that while MRI has limitations (low positive predictive value), it can effectively confirm negative AUS results with a high negative predictive value, suggesting that some cases of SLNB might be safely omitted.

Purpose: Clinically, breast cancer can be divided into 4 subtypes based on the presence of hormone receptors, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and Ki-67. Because the pattern and time of recurrence vary according to the subtype, we evaluated whether there was a difference in overall survival (OS) among the subtypes according to the time and type of recurrence.

Methods: A total of 2,730 patients who underwent breast cancer surgery were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates trends in treatment for high-risk hormone receptor-positive, HER-2-negative breast cancer patients in Korea from 2000 to 2018, particularly focusing on the shift from adjuvant chemotherapy (CTx) combined with hormonal treatment (HT) to HT alone.
  • - An analysis of data from nearly 41,000 women revealed a significant increase in the use of HT only, from 21% in 2000 to 64.6% in 2018, while overall survival (OS) rates showed no significant difference between the two treatment approaches.
  • - The findings suggest that for selected patients, including those with T2N1 disease, HT alone may be a sufficient and safe treatment option
