Background: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and outcomes of myocarditis/pericarditis after BNT162b2 vaccination in Korean adolescents.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort analysis of adolescents aged 12-19 years old diagnosed with myocarditis/pericarditis within 42 days of BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination. All reported cases were investigated by city or government epidemiologists and the diagnostic certainty and causality was determined by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Adverse Event Following Immunization Expert Advisory Committee according to the modified version of Brighton Collaboration Myocarditis/Pericarditis Working group's case definitions.

In this study, skin sampling by tape stripping for lipid analysis was optimized by examining the lipid profiles of the stratum corneum (SC), focusing on the composition and levels of ceramides (Cer), diacylglycerols (DG), and triacylglycerols (TG), using nanoflow ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Significant variations in the number and composition of the identified lipids, particularly Cer and neutral lipid species, were observed across different skin locations, including the forearm, forehead, cheek, and neck. Analysis of the layer-to-layer lipid profiles of the seven consecutive layers revealed a gradual decrease in DG and TG levels from the outermost to the innermost layers, with certain Cer subclasses showing increases in the second to fourth layers and subsequent decreases.

Interleukin (IL)-33, a member of the IL-1 cytokine family, plays a vital role in immune system regulation and inflammation, with oxidative stress being implicated in its expression. During the search for compounds from natural sources with potential as therapeutic agents for allergic diseases via IL-33 signal modulation, we discovered significant IL-33 inhibitory activity in the methanol extract of (sword bean) pods. Through chromatographic separation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, we isolated 11 compounds (-) from the methanol extract.

Over-consumption of iron-rich red meat and hereditary or genetic iron overload are associated with an increased risk of colorectal carcinogenesis, yet the mechanistic basis of how metal-mediated signaling leads to oncogenesis remains enigmatic. Using fresh colorectal cancer samples we identify Pirin, an iron sensor, that overcomes a rate-limiting step in oncogenesis, by reactivating the dormant human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) subunit of the telomerase holoenzyme in an iron-(Fe3+)-dependent manner and thereby drives colorectal cancers. Chemical genetic screens combined with isothermal dose-response fingerprinting and mass spectrometry identified a small molecule SP2509 that specifically inhibits Pirin-mediated hTERT reactivation in colorectal cancers by competing with iron-(Fe3+) binding.
