Biocatalysis enables the scalable conversion of biobased furans into various furfurylamines.

Biobased furans have emerged as chemical building blocks for the development of materials because of their diverse scaffolds and as they can be directly prepared from sugars. However, selective, efficient, and cost-effective scalable conversion of biobased furans remains elusive. Here, we report a robust transaminase (TA) from Shimia marina (SMTA) that enables the scalable amination of biobased furanaldehydes with high activity and broad substrate specificity.

Viral etiology of sporadic cases of parotitis among children in Korea during 2013-2014.

Recent years have seen a high incidence of mumps, which is generally diagnosed based on clinical features, especially parotitis, without laboratory confirmation in Korea. To better understand the epidemiology of mumps in Korean children, we investigated sporadic suspected mumps cases with parotitis. In total, 237 buccal swabs or throat swabs collected from children with parotitis who had been clinically diagnosed with mumps were tested using real-time PCR for the detection of six viruses (Epstein-Barr virus, Human herpesvirus 6, Mumps virus, Human parainfluenza virus-1, -2, -3, Human adenovirus, Human bocavirus).

[A case of abdominal wall actinomycosis].

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative granulomatous infectious disease caused by actinomyces species that is characterized by formation of characteristic clumps called as sulfur granules. Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare disease and is often difficult to diagnose before operation. Abdominal actinomycosis infiltrating into the abdominal wall and adhering to the colon is even rarer.

Fish biological effect monitoring of chemical stressors using a generalized linear model in South Sea, Korea.

To evaluate the health status at six different study areas, we used the generalized linear model approach with selected biochemical markers in resident fish from uncontaminated and contaminated sites. We also confirmed the independence between the biochemical indices and the morphometric indices including the hepato-somatic index (HSI), gonado-somatic index (GSI), and condition factor (CF) in fish from the sampling areas. The effect of area on the presence of biotransformation markers (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity; EROD) was significantly high in Masan Bay.

The indications for nonsurgical management in patients with colorectal perforation after colonoscopy.

Recently, the risk of colonic perforation has been increasing with the increased frequency of advanced therapeutic endoscopy.
