The biological mechanisms underlying women's increased Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevalence remain undefined. Previous case/control studies have identified sex-biased molecular pathways, but sex-specific relationships between gene expression and AD endophenotypes, particularly sex chromosomes, are underexplored. With bulk transcriptomic data across 3 brain regions from 767 decedents, we investigated sex-specific associations between gene expression and post-mortem β-amyloid and tau as well as antemortem longitudinal cognition.

The current study examined the extent to which gender/sex preference moderated the role of cohabitation on incest avoidance in an online sample of 1,623 adults with at least one opposite-sex sibling. Consistent with previous research, we found that longer cohabitation with a sibling was associated with decreased sexual interest in sexual contact between hypothetical siblings. We extended the literature by finding that gender/sex preferences contribute significantly to our understanding of incest avoidance.

The concordance between paraphilic interest and behavior is moderate to strong in previous studies. In the present study, we examined whether sexual excitation (SE) and sexual inhibition (SI) moderate the concordance between paraphilic interest and behavior, across several paraphilic themes. We expected that stronger concordance would be found at high levels of SE and weaker concordance would be found at high levels of SI, for both men and women.

Sibling sexual behaviour, despite historical and cross-cultural incest taboos and biologically driven incest avoidance, poses a persistent problem. We tested factors theorized to be associated with sibling incest in a cross-sectional online survey of 1,863 respondents with siblings mainly from North America and Germany. We found that 13% of participants reported engaging in sexual contact with a sibling, typically starting at the age of 10, and that step-siblings and half-siblings were more likely to engage in sibling incest than full siblings.

Plasma glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an emerging biomarker of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with higher blood GFAP levels linked to faster cognitive decline, particularly among individuals with high brain amyloid burden. However, few studies have examined brain GFAP expression to clarify if peripheral associations reflect brain changes. This study aimed to correlate region-specific GFAP mRNA expression (n = 917) and protein abundance (n=386) with diverse neuropathological measures at autopsy in the Religious Orders Study and Rush Memory and Aging Project (ROS/MAP) and to characterize the interaction between brain GFAP and brain amyloid burden on downstream outcomes.

Stigma-related stress may contribute to increased risk in individuals who are sexually attracted to children. Further, certain subgroups of people attracted to children may be more stigmatized than others; this has important implications for prevention programs. We conducted a vignette study to examine whether public stigma toward people attracted to children differed based on the person's gender (man/woman), the gender of the child to whom the person is attracted (boy/girl), and preferentiality (non-preferentially/preferentially attracted to children).

Establishing a sustainable life-support system for space exploration is a formidable challenge due to the vast distances, high costs, and environmental differences from Earth. Building upon the lessons from the Biosphere 2 experiment, we introduce the novel "Ecosphere" and "Biosealed" systems, self-sustaining ecosystems within customizable, enclosed containers. These systems incorporate terrestrial ecosystems and groundwater layers, offering a potential model for transplanting Earth-like biomes to extraterrestrial environments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between changes in β-amyloid (Aβ) levels and cognitive decline over time, highlighting that Aβ accumulation is linked to subsequent cognitive deterioration in older adults.
  • Researchers utilized sophisticated statistical models on data from a long-term study of 352 cognitively normal older participants, revealing that short-term changes in Aβ are more impactful on cognition than traditional measurements of Aβ burden and tau levels.
  • Contrary to previous findings, the study found no significant link between tau levels in the medial temporal lobe and cognitive performance, suggesting that understanding cognitive decline requires looking at dynamic changes rather than static measures.

  • * A review of over 39,000 deliveries found that higher fasting glucose (FG) and 2-hour glucose (2hG) levels in early pregnancy are linked with increased risks of various complications, starting from specific glucose thresholds.
  • * Every mmol/L increase in FG or 2hG correlates with a greater likelihood of complications such as pre-eclampsia, insulin use, and larger babies, indicating that early pregnancy glycaemia should be monitored more closely in high-risk women.

Studies demonstrated increased obstetric and neonatal complications in women with schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (SSD), but most inadequately addressed confounders and rarely considered antipsychotic effects. We conducted a meta-analysis and a population-based cohort study evaluating associations of adverse obstetric/neonatal outcomes with SSD and prenatal antipsychotic use. In the meta-analysis, we searched four databases from inception to October-31-2023 and generated pooled risk estimates using random-effect models.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aims to understand the behaviors of individuals who consume child sexual abuse material (CSAM) by identifying predictors of both initial and ongoing use.
  • - Key findings show that significant predictors for ever viewing CSAM include being male, older age groups (25-34 and 55+), earlier exposure to adult pornography, and experiencing childhood abuse, with nearly half of initial viewers intentionally watching CSAM again.
  • - The results highlight the need for prevention strategies targeting those at risk of first exposure to CSAM, as well as interventions to address continued usage after initial exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on validating the Revised Screening Scale for Pedophilic Interests (SSPI-2) among 170 Portuguese men convicted of child sexual offenses, comparing those in prison and those in community sentences.
  • - Results showed that SSPI-2 has strong convergent validity, correlating well with indicators of sexual deviance, prior convictions, and multiple child victims, effectively identifying men with heightened sexual arousal to children versus adults.
  • - The SSPI-2 also demonstrated good divergent validity, indicating that it doesn't correlate with measures of psychopathy or nonsexual criminal history, suggesting it's a reliable tool for assessing pedophilic interests.

The radioisotope thorium-229 (Th) is renowned for its extraordinarily low-energy, long-lived nuclear first-excited state. This isomeric state can be excited by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lasers and Th has been proposed as a reference transition for ultra-precise nuclear clocks. To assess the feasibility and performance of the nuclear clock concept, time-controlled excitation and depopulation of the Th isomer are imperative.

The strain dependence of the Johari-Goldstein (JG)-β relaxation time, as well as the directional dependence, was systematically investigated for stretched cross-linked polybutadiene using time-domain interferometry. We found that the strain dependence of the JG-β relaxation time is directionally dependent, contrary to expectation: the relaxation time of the JG-β motion, whose displacement is perpendicular to the stretching direction, decreases with stretching, whereas the relaxation time of the parallel JG-β motion changes little. This result is distinct from the previously reported strain dependence of the α relaxation time, where the relaxation time increases isotropically with stretching.
