Prevalence of hepatitis A and E viruses in wastewater in Asian countries.

Hepatitis A and E viruses (HAV and HEV, respectively) remain a significant global health concern despite advancements in healthcare and vaccination programs. Regular monitoring and vaccine efficacy of HAV are still lacking in different countries. This study aimed to investigate HAV and HEV prevalence in developed, developing, and least-developed Asian countries using wastewater as a surveillance tool.

Detection of enteroviruses related to hand foot and mouth disease in wastewater of Asian communities.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is contagious and predominantly affects children below the age of five. HFMD-associated serotypes of Enterovirus A (EVA) family include EVA71, Coxsackievirus A type 6 (CVA6), 10 (CVA10), and 16 (CVA16). Although prevalent in numerous Asian countries, studies on HFMD-causing agents in wastewater are scarce.

Institutionalising wastewater surveillance systems to minimise the impact of COVID-19: cases of Indonesia, Japan and Viet Nam.

This mini review describes the current status and challenges regarding institutionalisation of wastewater surveillance systems against COVID-19. Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater has been proposed to be a potential tool to understand the actual prevalence of COVID-19 in the community, and it could be an effective approach to monitor the trend during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, challenges to institutionalise wastewater surveillance systems are still abundant and unfolding at a rapid rate given that the international understanding regarding the scientific knowledge and socio-political impacts of COVID-19 are in the developing stages.

Aerobic degradation of high tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and its impacts on nitrification and microbial community.

Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was often used as developer in the high-tech industries. Information regarding biological treatment of high TMAH-containing wastewater is limited. This study investigated aerobic degradation of high TMAH, its impacts on nitrification, and microbial community in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR).
