Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in western countries. Adjuvant treatment does not seem to be highly effective and recurrent or metastatic disease occurs in half of the new cases within one year of diagnosis and median survival does not exceed 18 months. CRC represents an optimal model for primary and secondary prevention, given the availability of effective screening procedures and of a well defined multi-step carcinogenic pathway.

An epizootic of avian pox in endemic short-toed larks (Calandrella rufescens) and Berthelot's pipits (Anthus berthelotti) in the Canary Islands, Spain.

Between January 2002 and November 2003, 50% (n = 395) of short-toed larks (Calandrella rufescens) and 28% (n = 139) of Berthelot's pipits (Anthus berthelotti) examined on the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, Canary Islands, had gross lesions compatible with avian pox. Factors associated with circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-I and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 in 740 women at risk for breast cancer.

Prospective studies have shown an association between elevated plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and/or decreased levels of its major circulating carrier protein insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) and increased risk of major cancers. Identifying the factors which affect these biomarkers is of particular interest as subjects at increased risk could benefit from lifestyle changes, and/or chemoprevention intervention. We evaluated the association between constitutional, hormonal and clinical factors and IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in 740 women, including 376 unaffected women and 364 women with intraepithelial neoplasia (IEN) or early invasive breast cancer enrolled in breast cancer chemoprevention trials, conducted at a single institution.

Diagnosing comorbid psychiatric disorders in substance abusers: validity of the Spanish versions of the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV.

Objective: The authors' goal was to assess the validity of DSM-IV diagnoses obtained with the Spanish versions of the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders (PRISM) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) compared with the longitudinal, expert, all data (LEAD) procedure in a group of substance abusers.

Method: A total of 105 substance abusers recruited at a drug abuse treatment center in Barcelona, Spain, were assessed. The PRISM and SCID were administered blindly by independent research interviewers.

Supportive therapy for schizophrenia: possible mechanisms and implications for adjunctive psychosocial treatments.

This article posits that the positive findings for supportive therapy (ST) in recent trials may indicate an important but undervalued aspect of psychosocial interventions for schizophrenia. In developing this thesis, we consider the possible mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of ST observed in recent trials of cognitive behavioral therapy for schizophrenia. We place this evidence in the context of a review of psychological models of mental health, the therapeutic alliance, and research on social cognition and social support in schizophrenia.

Hla-DPB1 mismatch in HLA-A-B-DRB1 identical sibling donor stem cell transplantation and acute graft-versus-host disease.

Background: The role of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DPB1 as a transplantation antigen is controversial. A higher incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) has been described after unrelated donor bone marrow transplant when both HLA-DPB1 alleles were mismatched.

Methods: We investigated the impact of a single HLA-DPB1 mismatch after HLA-A-B-DRB1 identical sibling donor transplantation on aGVHD.

Tamoxifen and metabolite concentrations in serum and breast cancer tissue during three dose regimens in a randomized preoperative trial.

Purpose: Both therapeutic and adverse effects of tamoxifen may be related to its tissue concentrations. We investigated concentrations of tamoxifen, 4-hydroxytamoxifen, N-desmethyltamoxifen, and N-didesmethyltamoxifen in serum, normal breast, and breast cancer tissues during conventional dosage and two low-dose regimens. Furthermore we studied tamoxifen effects on the cancer proliferation marker Ki-67, and on sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).

Graft rejection is a major cause of treatment failure after T-cell-depleted stem cell transplantation (TCD-SCT) and remains a therapeutic challenge. Donor leukocyte infusions (DLIs) have an efficient graft versus host effect, which has been successfully used to treat recipient relapses. We hypothesized that this effect could be exploited to counteract the host versus graft reactions responsible for graft rejection.

Progress in chemoprevention of breast cancer.

Primary prevention trials have shown that tamoxifen lowers breast cancer incidence by 30-40%. Because of the endometrial risk of tamoxifen and the pro-thrombotic effects of tamoxifen and raloxifene, different strategies are being pursued to improve the risk:benefit ratio of breast cancer chemoprevention. Thus, raloxifene is being compared with tamoxifen in a phase III trial, while the minimal active dose of tamoxifen is being assessed in phase I-II trials.

A randomised study of 10 microg/kg/day (single dose) vs 2 x 5 microg/kg/day (split dose) G-CSF as stem cell mobilisation regimen in high-risk breast cancer patients.

A randomised trial in breast cancer patients was designed to compare the number of peripheral blood progenitor cells collected after mobilisation with a single dose of 10 microg/kg/day granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (n=14) or a split dose of 5 microg/kg twice daily (n=14). Both groups were well balanced. No significant differences were observed between groups regarding aphereses parameters.

Factors predicting peripheral blood progenitor cell collection from pediatric donors for allogeneic transplantation.

Background And Objectives: Although several studies have reported on the use of children as donors for peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC), no specific characteristics have been identified as predictors of PBPC collection in this population. In this study we analyzed predictive factors for PBPC collection in pediatric donors.

Design And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed factors predicting the yield for a target CD34+ cell dose of > or =4x10(6)/Kg donor or recipient body weight, in 105 aphereses from 76 healthy pediatric donors (36 boys and 40 girls) included in the Spanish National Donor Registry.

Electron microscopy of the epithelial flap created by ethanol treatment in the rabbit corneal epithelium.

Purpose: To assess the effect of corneal debridement with 25% ethanol on rabbit corneal epithelium by electron microscopy.

Methods: Rabbit corneas were deepithelialized by applying 25% ethanol for 3 minutes, and a hinged epithelial flap was created and repositioned.

Lineage-specific chimaerism quantification after T-cell depleted peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

Patients that receive a T-cell depleted (TCD) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) show higher risk of graft failure/rejection and of disease relapse than those that receive unmanipulated grafts. The purpose of the present investigation was to analyze the usefulness of chimaerism quantification in bone marrow (BM), peripheral blood (PB), and leukocyte lineages such as T lymphocytes (CD3+,both CD4+ and CD8+), B lymphocytes (CD19+) and myeloid cells (CD15+), for the early detection of graft failure/rejection episodes and disease relapse after TCD-PBSCT. Two of the ten (2/10) patients included in the study showed stable complete chimaerism (CC).

Clinical applicability of the new EORTC/MSG classification for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in patients with hematological malignancies and autopsy-confirmed invasive aspergillosis.

Diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is often difficult. Recently, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group (EORTC/MSG) has proposed new criteria for the classification of invasive fungal infections. The influence of hydrocortisone on cellular defence mechanisms of Biomphalaria glabrata.

Cell proliferation and morphometric changes in the rat kidney during postnatal development.

We have investigated the temporal maturation of the rat kidney during the postnatal developmental period. As a result, we observed the following: an active process of cortical cell proliferation and differentiation occurs as late as day 20. The medulla is the most immature zone at birth and displays the greatest morphological changes during this period.

Second mobilization and collection of peripheral blood progenitor cells in healthy donors is associated with lower CD34(+) cell yields.

We have retrospectively evaluated the results of two cycles of mobilization and collection of peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) from 46 healthy donors included in the Spanish National Donor Registry. Mobilization involved the administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) at a median dose of 10 microg/kg per day, and apheresis was begun after the fourth dose of G-CSF in both cycles. The median interval between both mobilizations was 187 days (range, 7-1428 days).
