Purpose: Locally advanced colorectal tumors frequently invade adjacent organs, particularly the urinary bladder in the sigmoid colon and upper rectum, complicating multivisceral resections. This study compared postoperative outcomes of partial cystectomy (PC) and total cystectomy (TC) in patients with locally advanced colorectal cancer.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Central Register of Clinical Trials, and Web of Science for studies published up to November 2024.

Purpose: Forceful coughing is assumed to be an uncommon etiology for lateral abdominal wall hernias. The literature regarding this topic is very limited and there is a lack of consensus in management, both operative and non-operative. We aim to report our center's experience in repair of lateral abdominal wall hernias secondary to vigorous coughing.

Objective: We aim to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the efficacy and safety of low-cost meshes compared to polypropylene meshes for IHR.

Methods: We searched Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing low-cost and standard meshes for IHR. Low-cost mesh was defined as a material non-designed for medical use.

Article Synopsis
  • Accidental ureteric injury during colorectal surgery can lead to serious complications like urinary tract infections and kidney damage, but using double J stents may help avoid these injuries.
  • A review of 11 studies with over 71,000 patients showed no significant reduction in ureteral injuries with stent use, though it was linked to longer surgery times and a higher risk of acute kidney injury.
  • Overall, while prophylactic ureteral stents increased operative time and kidney issues, they did not significantly impact ureteral injuries, urinary infections, or other complications during colorectal surgery.

Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most frequently performed procedures by general surgeons. Strategies for minimizing bile duct injuries including use of the critical view of safety method, as outlined by the SAGES Safe Cholecystectomy Program, are not always possible. Subtotal cholecystectomy has emerged as a safe "bail-out" maneuver to avoid iatrogenic bile duct injury in these difficult cases.

Background: Ventral hernia repair (VHR) is often performed in patients with obesity. While panniculectomy improves cosmetic outcomes, it may increase complications, particularly wound-related adverse events. Despite its widespread use, the impact of concurrent panniculectomy on postoperative complications in VHR remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • The Ventral Hernia Working Group (VHWG) created a guideline recommending biologic mesh for high-risk patients, primarily based on expert opinion.
  • A study examined publications on ventral hernia repair (VHR) before and after the VHWG's guidelines to see how this influenced discussions about hernia repair and complications.
  • Results showed an increase in the use of specific terms related to biologic mesh and comorbidities in VHR literature after the guideline was published, suggesting the VHWG's influence on research focus in this area.

Purpose: Coloanal anastomosis with loop diverting ileostomy (CAA) is an option for low anterior resection of the rectum, and Turnbull-Cutait coloanal anastomosis (TCA) regained popularity in the effort to offer patients a reconstructive option. In this context, we aimed to compare both techniques.

Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched for studies published until January 2024.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the established gold standard treatment for benign gallbladder diseases. However, robotic cholecystectomy is still controversial. Therefore, we aimed to compare intraoperative and postoperative outcomes in LC and robotic-assisted cholecystectomy (RAC) in patients with nonmalignant gallbladder conditions.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is increasingly being utilized for the resection of superficial gastrointestinal neoplasms. However, the long procedure time poses a technical challenge for conventional ESD (C-ESD). Traction-assisted ESD (T-ESD) was developed to facilitate the procedure by reducing its duration.

Introduction: Reinforcement of crural closure with synthetic resorbable mesh has been proposed to decrease recurrence rates after hiatal hernia repair, but continues to be controversial. This systematic review aims to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and intermediate-term results of using biosynthetic mesh to augment the hiatus.

Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed throughout this systematic review.

Background: Given the variability in abdominal physiology and hernia presentation between sexes, better comprehension of sex-related differences in outcomes would tailor surgical approach and counseling regarding postoperative outcomes. This meta-analysis aims to appraise the effect of sex on the outcomes of ventral hernia repair.

Methods: A literature search in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane selected studies comparing outcomes of ventral hernia repair between sexes.

Over the last decades, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have proven to be remarkable tools for drug delivery and theranostic applications in cancer treatment. On the other hand, Pt(IV) prodrugs have been employed as an interesting alternative to the more common Pt(II) complexes, such as cisplatin, for cancer chemotherapy. Searching to design an image-guided nanocarrier to deliver selectively Pt(IV) prodrugs to tumors expressing the gastrin releasing peptide receptor (GRPR), we have synthesized small core AuNPs carrying a thiolated DOTA derivative, a GRPR-targeting bombesin analog (BBN[7-14]) and a Pt(IV) prodrug attached to the AuNPs without () or with a PEGylated linker ( and ).

Background: Concomitant robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) and robotic inguinal hernia repair (RIHR) has been reported. Nevertheless, data on its safety is lacking and some surgeons avoid performing both operations concurrently due to the potential risk of mesh related complications in the setting of a fresh vesicourethral anastomosis. We aimed to investigate differences in 30-day outcomes between patients undergoing RALP+RIHR and those undergoing RIHR alone.

Introduction And Importance: Nonoperative management of adhesive SBO is well established but remains a challenge in patients without prior abdominal surgery. We aim to report a case of successful nonoperative management with the use of enteral hypertonic water-soluble contrast administration in a patient with virgin abdomen.

Case Presentation: A healthy 24-year old man with no previous surgery presented to the emergency room with one day of abdominal pain.

Objective: Evaluation of rheumatoid hand-associated metacarpophalangeal joint silicone arthroplasty most often relies on functional scores alone. This study aimed to understand the correlation between perceived and observed function, strength, and alignment.

Methods: Cross-sectional study including all 11 women (15 hands) submitted to second to fifth metacarpophalangeal joint arthroplasty due to rheumatoid arthritis involvement for a time period of seven years.

A 64-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of recurrent conjunctivitis. He was evaluated by an ophthalmologist and submitted to a CT scan that revealed an intraconic mass with invasion of the lateral orbital wall. He was operated, the mass was completely removed (with preservation of the intraorbital structures) and the lateral orbital wall rebuilt.

Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) is one of the most challenging problems in orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal infections specifically. Some very important controversies remain and strong evidence-based recommendations are still lacking in many clinical aspects. Therefore, an undisputed methodology of treatment does not exist yet and there are many different valid approaches.
