Vascular complications in the surgical treatment of hip fractures are rare. Depending on the arterial injury, severe intraoperative bleeding or a subacute hematoma formation with arterial pseudoaneurysm development can occur. In the literature, the more frequently described complications are large local hematomas after osteosynthesis with sliding hip screws.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWhile the value of national arthroplasty registries (NAR) for quality improvement in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has already been widely reported, some methodological limitations associated with observational epidemiological studies that may interfere with the assessment of safety and efficacy of prosthetic implants have recently been described in the literature. Among the main limitations of NAR, the need for at least 80% compliance of all health institutions covered by the registry is emphasized; completeness equal or greater than 90% of all THA performed; restricted data collection; use of revision surgery as the sole criterion for outcome; and the inability of establishing a definite causal link with prosthetic dysfunction. The present article evaluates the advantages and limitations of NAR, in the light of current knowledge, which point to the need for a broader data collection and the use of more structured criteria for defining outcomes.

Methods: 66 patients underwent cemented total arthroplasty of 72 hips. The inclination of acetabular component was measured using plain radiograph.
Objective: To compare the existence of agreement between measurements of anteversion of the femoral neck and the degrees of osteoarthritis and abnormality of the neck-shaft angle in patients with unilateral idiopathic hip osteoarthritis, among three evaluators.
Methods: Forty-two patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis were evaluated by means of simple radiography and computed tomography.
Results: It was observed that there was no significant variation in femoral anteversion between the diseased and healthy hips.
Unlabelled: To analyze anatomical variations of the proximal end of femur that could cause a femoroacetabular impact.
Methods: 199 skeletically mature anatomical specimens of femurs were used. The femurs were measured in order to determine the anteversion angle of the femoral neck, neckshaft angle, sphericity of the femoral head at anteroposterior and superoinferior, angle between epiphysis and the anterior femoral neck, angle between epiphysis and the neck at lateral plane, anteroposterior distance at 5mm of the head and neck junction and anteroposterior distance of the neck base.
