Hemangioblastomas associated with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease are frequently multiple and recur during prolonged follow-up. Currently, no systemic treatment is available for these tumors. Recent studies have shown the expression of somatostatin receptors in these types of hemangioblastomas.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of preoperative positron emission tomography/computed tomography with Ga-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (Ga-PSMA PET/CT) for staging prostate cancer and compare it with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using histopathology of surgical specimens as the gold standard.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective study, 65 patients with prostate cancer were analyzed.

Results: The accuracy of Ga-PSMA PET/CT for tumor detection was 95%, and that of MRI was 91%.

Background: Chagas heart disease (CHD) is characterized by progressive myocardial inflammation associated with myocardial fibrosis and segmental abnormalities that may lead to malignant ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. This arrhythmia might be related to the persistence of parasitemia or inflammation in the myocardium in late-stage CHD. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has been used to detect myocardial inflammation in non-ischemic cardiomyopathies, such as sarcoidosis, and might be useful for risk prediction in patients with CHD.

Background: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) can be the first clinical event of Chagas heart disease (CHD). However, current guidelines contain no clear recommendation for early cardioverter-defibrillator implantation. Using imaging modalities, we evaluated associations among autonomic denervation, myocardial hypoperfusion, fibrosis and ventricular arrhythmia in CHD.

Article Synopsis
  • A study assessed lung glycolytic activity, clinical symptoms, and various biomarkers in survivors of COVID-19 pneumonia, involving adults who had moderate to severe cases and included a control group.* ! -
  • Out of 53 survivors, all reported persistent symptoms, with many experiencing multiple issues; their lung density and metabolic activity were higher than that of control subjects months after recovery.* ! -
  • The study found elevated levels of plasma markers related to inflammation and endothelial activation in survivors, suggesting ongoing health effects and insights into the long-term impacts of COVID-19 pneumonia.* !

Cyclic Cushing's syndrome (CS) due to thymic carcinoid is a rare disorder. We report a case of cyclic CS due to ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting atypical thymic carcinoid tumor and reviewed similar cases published in the literature. Our patient had hypercortisolemia lasting approximately one month, followed by normal cortisol secretion, with relapse one year later.

Objective: To evaluate levels of spirituality and hope in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) according to sociodemographic factors.

Design: This was a primary, prospective, descriptive, analytical, and clinical study. Questionnaires assessing sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients, the Spirituality Self-rating Scale (SSRS), and the Herth Hope Index (HHI) were administered to all participants.

Background: Limbic encephalitis was originally described as a rare clinical neuropathological entity involving seizures and neuropsychological disturbances. In this report, we describe cerebral patterns visualized by positron emission tomography in a patient with limbic encephalitis and cholangiocarcinoma. To our knowledge, there is no other description in the literature of cerebral positron emission tomography findings in the setting of limbic encephalitis and subsequent diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma.

This study aimed to assess the vertical patterns of oviposition and temporal changes in the distribution of mosquito species in an area of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and in particular, the behavior and oviposition of potential yellow fever virus vectors. Mosquito samples were collected from the Ecological Reserve Guapiaçu (REGUA, Brazil), which includes a somewhat disturbed forest, with a large diversity of plants and animals. In all, 5,458 specimens (ten species from seven genera) were collected.

Aim: Pain was assessed in patients with venous leg ulcers treated with either split-thickness skin grafts or conventional treatment to evaluate to what extent skin grafting reduces pain in this population.

Methods: A controlled prospective clinical trial was conducted from July 2008 to June 2011 in two hospitals in São Paulo, Brazil. Two hundred patients with venous leg ulcers were divided into two treatment groups of 100 patients each: control group (conservative treatment) and surgery group (skin grafting).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the eggs of three species of Triatoma, analyzing their body and operculum structure through microscopy.
  • Triatoma rubrovaria is highlighted as a significant vector for Trypanosoma cruzi in rural Rio Grande do Sul, with T. circummaculata also being important.
  • Notable morphological differences were found, including variations in egg size and perforation counts, which could aid in better understanding and monitoring these vectors in human habitats.
