Bioaugmentation-assisted phytoremediation implies the administration of selected plant growth promoting bacteria, which significantly improve plant growth and sequestration of heavy metals. In this work, 184 bacterial strains associated with roots of Pistacia lentiscus were isolated from plants spontaneously growing in the abandoned Sardinian mining areas (SW Sardinia, Italy) and phylogenetically characterised. From May to October 2006, six severe Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections were diagnosed in patients undergoing SCT in the SCT unit of the Careggi hospital (Florence, Italy). Four of the infected patients were treated consecutively in the same room (room N). On the hypothesis of a possible environmental source of infection, samples were collected from different sites that had potential for cross-contamination throughout the SCT unit, including the electrolytic chloroxidant disinfectant used for hand washing (Irgasan) and the disinfectant used for facilities cleaning.

A single PMB dose (300 mg kg(-1)), loaded in microparticles or dissolved in water, was administered to rats by oral gavage under fasted and fed conditions. By monitoring incidence of mortality, animal behaviour, clinical signs and abnormality in several organs, PMB in water solution was found lethal at a dose lower than the LD50 (790 mg kg(-1)) in the fasted state and toxic for the gastrointestinal tract in the fed state.

Lipid microparticles (lipospheres) loaded with butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDBM), a widely used UV-A sunscreen agent, were prepared by melt technique and evaluated for skin permeation both in vivo, by tape stripping method, and in vitro, by a flow-through diffusion chamber. Following in vivo human skin application of an O/W emulsion containing 2% of BMDBM loaded in lipospheres, 15% of the applied sunscreen accumulated in the uppermost layers of the stratum corneum without remarkably modifying the skin permeation of the unencapsulated sunscreen. These results were found to be predicted by an in vitro methodology involving the diffusion of BMDBM through a lipophilized synthetic membrane into a hydrophilic receptor phase, simulating the viable epidermis better than an ethanolic receptor phase.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe effectiveness, as stone restoration materials, of a series of polymers obtained by "in situ polymerization" of the epoxy derivative 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYTS) with the primary amine 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (ATS), at various molar ratios and concentrations, has been explored through selected preliminary tests. The experiments carried on a low-porosity quartzite show that, independently from concentration and molar ratio, all of the mixtures fail to significantly affect the porosimetric and hydric properties of this stone while inducing not negligible chromatic alterations. As it concerns high porosity stones, such as Comiso calcarenite, the 2:1 15% mixture only has been selected for further experiments since preliminary tests show that it acts as an excellent barrier against water penetration either by capillarity as by total immersion while showing only negligible chromatic alterations.

Two lithotypes, the Comiso calcarenite and Mistretta quartzite, stones largely used in artworks of north-eastern Sicily, were treated with the above polymer and its conserving efficacy evaluated in terms of porosimetric features, hydric properties and appearance. The collected data were compared to those provided, under the same experimental conditions, by an ethylmethacrylate/methylmethacrylate copolymer and an alkylalchoxysilane, products widely employed in the protection of stones.
