The results of light and electron microscopy and morphometric studies of the alveolar wall in obstructive atelectasis in children with chronic nonspecific lung diseases (materials of 40 biopsies) are presented. Morphological changes in obstructive atelectases of various durations are described. Fresh atelectasis was shown to be characterized mostly by discirculatory and dystrophic changes.

Experiments were conducted on guinea pigs and rabbits. It was shown that treatment of human femoral vessels with metaperiodate and glutaraldehyde solutions led to a sharp (10-fold) reduction of the amount of water-soluble proteins in the tissue homogenates, to a decrease of the sensitising and anaphylactic activity of the extracts, to inertia in the precipitation test with homologous antiserum to crude tissue.

The authors present the results of chemical and immunochemical study of 4 protective fractions (Grasset's antigens, hydroxylamine vaccines, surface antigens, and Boivin's antigens) isolated from the virulent S. typhimurium strain, and of suppressor revertant obtained from streptomycin-dependent mutant of the initial strain. Despite some differences in their chemical and antigenic composition, Grasset's antigens, surface antigens fraction, and hydroxylamine vaccine contained the main cell protective substances and could be used (after further study) as vaccines for enteral immunization.

Changes in potentials and motility of the longitudinal and circular muscles of the small intestine, as well as the impulsation of afferent fibers of the mesenteric, splanchnic, and vagus nerves and the impulsation of sympathetic efferent fibers at the pre- and post-ganglionic levels during excitation of the mucosa by 1 M sucrose solution, were studied in acute experiments on cats. Intraluminal administration of sucrose increased the motility of both muscle layers as well as spike potential and firing rate of mesenteric afferents, decreased the firing rate of the left vagus afferents, and evoked a biphasic change of the firing rate of the left splanchnic afferents. The firing rate of sympathetic efferents increased.

The authors studied the antigenic activity of Bordetella pertussis during stab cultivation. For the first time there were revealed changes (oscillations) of antigenic activity: formation of 3 peaks of which the middle was the highest. A possibility of improving the quality of pertussis vaccine by using biomass at the height of the peak was experimentally founded.

Comparative study of various methods of treatment was carried out on 777 patients suffering from acute dysentery with a bacteriologically confirmed diagnosis. To assess the therapeutic efficacy, along with consideration of clinical signs of the disease, immunoglobulin level was examined in the blood and coprofiltrates; also the state of reparative processes in the mucosa was appreciated by the histological examination of the biopsy material. Results of the work carried out indicated the inexpediency of the treatment of this disease with a combination of levomycetin and phthalazol.

The authors compared the main parameters of pulmonary circulation in accordance to the data obtained at pulmonary artery catheterization (137 patients) and at the electropneumoplethysmography (102) patients). Comparative assessment of the obtained data permitted to find the regularity of the reconstruction of pulmonary circulation hemodynamics in children.
