Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) represents a global health challenge, with rising incidence and mortality rates. This study aimed to elucidate the clinical course and practices of CCA in Latin America.

Methods: This observational cohort study investigated individuals diagnosed with CCA between 2010 and 2023 at five referral centres across Latin America.

Chile is one of the most seismically active countries on Earth and is often associated with cascading hazards, such as ground shaking, liquefaction, tsunamis, and coseismic landslides. Additionally, removal mass is a global hazard with devastating impacts resulting in thousands of fatalities every year, substantial economic losses, and long-term economic disruption. The dataset described in this article consists of a comprehensive landslide inventory for the 2010 Mw 8.

Article Synopsis
  • Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a highly lethal cancer with low overall incidence but higher prevalence in specific regions like Chile; this study compares clinical and molecular features of GBC patients from Chile and the US.
  • The study involved 260 patients, revealing a significantly higher rate of gallstones in the Chilean cohort and similar genetic alteration prevalence between the two groups, with overall alterations found in 14% of patients.
  • Patients with GBC having genetic alterations showed better overall survival rates, suggesting they may benefit from targeted therapies, highlighting the necessity for broader genomic analysis in regions with high GBC rates.

Introduction: Controversy exists regarding the optimal management of AO/OTA 43. C3 pilon fractures. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is the gold standard treatment, but serious soft tissue and infectious complications have been previously reported.

Right atrial aneurysm is a rare congenital heart condition defined as a dilation of the right atrium in the absence of an underlying cause [1]. The clinical presentation varies; most patients are asymptomatic, while others may experience arrhythmias or intracavitary thrombi [1, 2]. We report a case.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric brain tumor prognosis is currently poor, but there is hope that CAR T cell therapy could improve outcomes, as indicated by a study involving the first six treated patients in a clinical trial (NCT04510051).
  • Interim results show that three out of five evaluable patients experienced some temporary clinical benefits, while overall there were no serious side effects from the treatment, despite some patients experiencing common issues like cytopenias.
  • Analysis of immune responses revealed interesting interactions between CAR T cells and the patient's immune system, highlighting differences in T cell populations in the cerebrospinal fluid compared to peripheral blood, suggesting the need for careful sampling in future studies.

Progressive accumulation of α-Synuclein (αSyn) in Lewy bodies (LBs) and loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons are the hallmark pathological features of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although currently available in vitro and in vivo models have provided crucial information about PD pathogenesis, the mechanistic link between the progressive accumulation of αSyn into LBs and the loss of DA neurons is still unclear. To address this, it is critical to model LB formation and DA neuron loss, the two key neuropathological aspects of PD, in a relevant in vitro system.

Objectives: To describe characteristics of women with aesthetically ideal buttocks and differentiate them from women with normal buttocks.

Methods: Case-control study comparing anatomy of women with ideal buttocks (buttocks models) to women with normal buttocks using magnetic resonance images, anthropometric measurements and photography.

Results: Comparing to normal women, buttocks models have a narrower waist, narrower iliac crest, wider C point, wider hips and bigger and thicker gluteus maximus muscle (GMM).

Objectives: The 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) is the enzyme controlling the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of cholesterol, sterols, and isoprenoids in the mevalonate biosynthetic pathway. Impaired function of HMGCR in zebrafish produces craniofacial malformations and orofacial cleft, mainly affecting the post-migratory neural crest cells with little earlier effect. Here we investigate morphogenetic and cellular mechanisms underlying the generation of these malformations.

Severe respiratory alkalosis is a life-threatening condition, as it induces hypo- calcaemia and extreme adrenergic sensitivity leading to cerebral and myocardial vasoconstriction. We report a 37-year-old woman with previous consultations for a conversion disorder. While she was infected with SARS-CoV-2 (without pulmonary involvement), she consulted in the emergency room due to panic attacks.

Purpose: Microvascular surgery requires highly specialized and individualized training; most surgical residency training programs are not equipped with microsurgery teaching expertise and/or facilities. The aim of this manuscript was to describe the methodology and clinical effectiveness of an international microsurgery course, currently taught year-round in eight countries.

Methods: In the 5-day microsurgery course trainees perform arterial and venous end-to-end, end-to-side, one-way-up, and continuous suture anastomoses and vein graft techniques in live animals, supported by video demonstrations and hands-on guidance by a full-time instructor.

Educational interventions to support Primary Care Provider (PCP) performance of skin cancer examinations typically train PCPs to "triage and refer," an approach that may result in diagnostic delays in regions without appropriate access to dermatology care. To address the needs of PCPs and patients in regions without appropriate access to dermatology care, we developed a multi-faceted pilot intervention, including a curriculum and telementoring, designed to support PCP performance of skin cancer detection examinations. Our intervention offers two levels of proficiency: "triage and refer" and "diagnose and manage.

Unlabelled: Antibody-peptide epitope conjugates (APEC) are a new class of modified antibody-drug conjugates that redirect T-cell viral immunity against tumor cells. APECs contain a tumor-specific protease cleavage site linked to a patient-specific viral epitope, resulting in presentation of viral epitopes on cancer cells and subsequent recruitment and killing by CD8+ T cells. Here we developed an experimental pipeline to create patient-specific APECs and identified new preclinical therapies for ovarian carcinoma.

Modeling traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been a challenge. Rodent and cellular models have provided relevant contributions despite their limitations. Here, we present a protocol for a TBI model based on the controlled cortical impact (CCI) performed on human cerebral organoids (COs), self-assembled 3D cultures that recapitulate features of the human brain.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a head injury that disrupts the normal brain structure and function. TBI has been extensively studied using various in vitro and in vivo models. Most of the studies have been done with rodent models, which may respond differently to TBI than human nerve cells.

Melanoma-screening examinations support early diagnosis, yet there is a national shortage of dermatologists and most at-risk patients lack access to dermatologic care. Primary care physicians (PCPs) in the United States often bridge these access gaps, and thus, play a critical role in the early detection of melanoma. However, most PCPs do not offer skin examinations.

The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) increased in the last decades. Thus, the number of pregnant women with the condition is also increasing. Given that active disease itself is the main risk factor for complications during pregnancy, it is necessary to achieve a complete remission before planning a pregnancy.

The southernmost portion of the Liquiñe-Ofqui fault zone (LOFZ) lies within the proposed slab window which formed due to oblique subduction of the Chile Ridge in Patagonia. Mapping of paleo-surface ruptures, offsets, and lithological separations along the master fault allowed us to constrain geologic slip rates for the first time with dextral rates of 11.6-24.
