Background: Photoaging, induced by chronic ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure, results in the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, leading to skin roughness, wrinkle formation, and reduced elasticity. Recent studies have explored probiotics as potential inhibitors of extrinsic aging, primarily through mechanisms that protect the skin barrier and reduce collagen breakdown.

Methods: This study investigates the anti-photoaging effects of MG5368 ( MG5368) and MG989 ( MG989) in UVB-exposed keratinocytes and an SKH-1 hairless mice model.

This study compared the antihypertensive effects of avenanthramides A, B, and C, with a focus on their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Treatment with avenanthramides A, B, and C (50 μM) significantly enhanced cell viability and nitric oxide production in H2O2-induced endothelial dysfunction in EA.hy926 cells.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a multifaceted metabolic condition, mainly defined by elevated blood glucose levels. A feature of type 2 DM includes insulin resistance (IR), which involves impairments within the insulin signaling pathways. Avenanthramides (AVNs) are phenolic alkaloids found in L.

This study investigated the protective effects of nicotinamide (NAM) and extract (AR) against ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced photoaging in Hs68 cells. The results demonstrated that NAM and AR, alone or in combination, exhibited concentration-dependent protective effects against UVB radiation. The highest synergistic effect was observed at a NAM:AR ratio of 6:4.

We comparatively evaluated the antioxidant properties of key triterpenes from , including asiatic acid (AA), asiaticoside, madecassic acid, and madecassoside, in several cell types, including skin fibroblasts, macrophages, hepatocytes, and endothelial cells, under conditions promoting oxidative stress. AA conferred the highest viability on Hs68 cells exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation. Triterpene pretreatment attenuated the UVB-induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as the UVB-induced depletion of glutathione (GSH) in skin fibroblasts.

Skeletal muscles are important for body movement, postural maintenance, and energy metabolism. Muscle atrophy is caused by various factors, including lack of exercise, age, genetics, and malnutrition, leading to the loss of muscle mass. The / signaling pathway plays a key role in the regulation of muscle protein synthesis and degradation.

Madecassoside (MD) and rosmarinic acid (RA) are well-known compounds with wound healing and antiaging effects. We demonstrated the synergistic protective activity of the MD-RA combination in Hs68 cells against ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced photoaging. The cell viabilities of MD, RA, and MD-RA combinations at various ratios (9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 3:7, 2:8, and 1:9, v/v) were measured to compare their protective effects against UVB radiation.

We recently reported that varying combination ratios of lemon balm ( L.) and corn silk extracts (Stigma of L. fruit) could reduce the obesity caused by a high-fat diet (HFD).

Lemon balm and corn silk are valuable medicinal herbs, which exhibit variety of beneficial effects for human health. The present study explored the anti-obesity effects of a mixture of lemon balm and corn silk extracts (M-LB/CS) by comparison with the effects of single herbal extracts in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in mice. HFD supplementation for 84 days increased the body weight, the fat mass density, the mean diameter of adipocytes, and the thickness of fat pads.

Pure, highly chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), with a 63 wt % of chlorine, showed a unique-thermal-pyrolytic-phenomenon that meant it could be converted to carbon material through solid-phase carbonisation rather than liquid-phase carbonisation. The CPVC began to decompose at 270 °C, with a rapid loss in mass due to dehydrochlorination and novel aromatisation and polycondensation up to 400 °C. In this study, we attempted to prepare carbon fibre (CF) without oxidative stabilisation, using the aforementioned CPVC as a novel precursor.

The pore structures of commercial pitch and PAN-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were investigated. The pore size and pore size distribution of pitch-based ACFs were measured by nitrogen adsorption isotherms and 129Xe NMR spectroscopy and compared with each other. Scanning tunneling microscopy showed that the ACFs were composed of spherical microdomain units the size of a few nanometers.

PtRu alloy nanoparticles (24 +/- 1 wt %, Ru/Pt atomic ratios = 0.91-0.97) supported on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared within a few minutes by using a microwave-polyol method.

Reported is the capacitive behavior of homogeneous and well-defined surfaces of pristine carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and surface-modified CNFs. The capacitances of the well-defined CNFs were measured with cyclic voltammetry to correlate the surface structure with capacitance. Among the studied pristine CNFs, the edge surfaces of platelet CNFs (PCNF) and herringbone CNFs were more effective in capacitive charging than the basal plane surface of tubular CNF by a factor of 3-5.
