The present study investigated the effect of soybean extracts fermented with Bacillus subtilis MORI, fermented soybean extracts (BTD-1) was investigated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The possible effects of BTD-1 against hyperglycemia and free radical-mediated oxidative stress was investigated by assaying the plasma glucose level and the activity of enzymatic antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA).

The anomalous origin of the right coronary artery (RCA) is a rare condition. Most RCA anomalies are usually found incidentally, but these findings have clinical significance because many patients, particularly young ones, present with sudden death, myocardial ischemia and syncope without other symptoms. We describe a case of a 39-year-old male patient that presented with effort chest pain and was diagnosed with anomalous RCA that originated from the ascending aorta with prior history of repairing ruptured sinus valsalva and ventricular septal defect.

Estimation of the nares-to-epiglottis distance and the nares-to-vocal cords distance in young children.

Background: Estimation of the nares-to-epiglottis and nares-to-vocal cords distances would facilitate the selection of properly sized nasopharyngeal airways and appropriate positioning of a fibreoptic bronchoscope in young children. The purposes of this study were to measure the nares-to-epiglottis and nares-to-vocal cords distances and to create an algorithm to predict these distances based on anatomical landmarks and paediatric characteristic data.

Methods: Two hundred and eleven children, aged 1-10 yr, undergoing elective surgery were investigated.

Single-dose pharmacokinetics and dose proportionality of intravenous pazufloxacin mesilate in healthy Korean volunteers.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics and dose proportionality of a single, intravenous dose of pazufloxacin mesilate, an injectable fluoroquinolone antibiotic, in healthy Korean male volunteers.

Methods: In this open-label, four-dose, parallel study, subjects were randomized to receive a single dose of pazufloxacin mesilate 300, 500, 600, and 1,000 mg (n = 6, 20, 6, and 8, respectively) administered as a 1-h intravenous infusion. Blood and urine samples were collected serially from 0 to 24 h after drug administration and analyzed using a validated HPLC method.

Anti-hyperlipidemic effect of soybean extract fermented by Bacillus subtilis MORI in db/db mice.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-hyperlipidemic effect of soy bean extract solution fermented by Bacillus subtilis MORI (BTD-1E) in obese db/db mice. Eight-week-old male db/db mice were administered 33.3 mg/kg BTD-1E solution orally once a day for four weeks.

Synovium-derived mesenchymal stem cells encapsulated in a novel injectable gel can repair osteochondral defects in a rabbit model.

We developed a novel injectable type I collagen/hyaluronic acid/fibrinogen (COL/HA/FG) composite gel that encapsulated synovium-derived mesenchymal stem cells (SDSCs) for the repair of damaged articular cartilage. We first analyzed the suitability of the composite gel as a three-dimensional injectable cell carrier in vitro. In an in vivo rabbit model, the COL/HA/FG composite gel displayed the potential to regenerate and repair osteochondral defects in the knee.

A bridging model for persistence of a polycomb group protein complex through DNA replication in vitro.

Epigenetic regulation may involve heritable chromatin states, but how chromatin features can be inherited through DNA replication is incompletely understood. We address this question using cell-free replication of chromatin. Previously, we showed that a Polycomb group complex, PRC1, remains continuously associated with chromatin through DNA replication.

Purpose: To determine the relation between the tunnel positions and the kinematic improvement of the knee joint after single-bundle (SB) and double-bundle (DB) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions.

Methods: The study included 42 patients who underwent either SB (n = 21) or DB (n = 21) ACL reconstruction using hamstring tendon autograft. Anterior tibial translation and rotational laxity were measured by a navigation system before and after graft fixation.

Long-term safety and efficacy of sirolimus- and Paclitaxel-eluting stents in patients with acute myocardial infarction: four-year observational study.

Background And Objectives: The comparison of long-term clinical effects between Sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) and Paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) for treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains unclear. Seeking to clarify this issue, we performed a retrospective analysis to evaluate four-year clinical outcomes of SES compared to PES treated AMI patients.

Subjects And Methods: From January 2004 to August 2006, all patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and acute non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) by implantation of either SES or PES were enrolled.

Intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy with cisplatin in epithelial ovarian cancer.

Objective: To assess retrospectively the feasibility of intraoperative intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy with cisplatin in epithelial ovarian cancer.

Methods: IP chemotherapy during optimal staging surgery was performed in 10 patients who were diagnosed with primary epithelial ovarian cancers between April 2008 and February 2011. Cisplatin (70 mg/m(2) in 1 L normal saline solution) was administered in the abdominal cavity for 24 hours postoperatively and then adjuvant chemotherapy was started 2-4 weeks after surgery.

Rate of vertical transmission of human papillomavirus from mothers to infants: relationship between infection rate and mode of delivery.

Background: In contrast to consistent epidemiologic evidence of the role of sexual transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV) in adults, various routes may be related to HPV infection in infants. We have assessed the extent of HPV infection during the perinatal period, and the relationship between mode of delivery and vertical transmission.

Results: A total of 291 pregnant women over 36 weeks of gestation were enrolled with informed consent.

Revision total knee arthroplasty with varus-valgus constrained prosthesis versus posterior stabilized prosthesis.

Purpose: The aims of this retrospective study were to provide the basis for the choice of prosthesis in revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and to evaluate the outcome with varus-valgus constrained prosthesis compared with posterior stabilized (PS) prosthesis.

Methods: One hundred and five patients (121 knees) received revision TKA; of which thirty-seven patients (42 knees) received PS prosthesis and sixty-eight patients (79 knees) received varus-valgus constrained prosthesis. The mean follow-up duration was 64.

Objective: Levofloxacin and cyclosporine show different pharmacokinetic properties, but are known to be dose proportional within the therapeutic range. The authors evaluated the pharmacokinetic proportionality of levofloxacin and cyclosporine over a 100-fold dose range in healthy human volunteers, by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

APEC Harmonization Center: challenges and issues relating to multiregional clinical trials in the APEC region.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Harmonization Center (AHC) was established in 2009 with the purpose of promoting harmonization of regulatory processes for drugs and medical devices. The AHC held three training workshops on multiregional clinical trials (MRCTs); these workshops provided forums for discussing the value and potential benefits of MRCTs. Participants from regulatory agencies, the pharmaceutical industry, and academia identified many issues and made recommendations for resolving major challenges with the aim of improving the capacity of the Asia-Pacific region to carry out MRCTs.

Pain management by periarticular multimodal drug injection after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a randomized, controlled study.

Purpose: We aimed to determine the efficacy of periarticular (PA) multimodal drug cocktail (MDC) infiltration for pain control after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with an autogenous bone-patellar tendon-bone graft.

Methods: We randomly assigned 100 patients to five study groups (20 per group): control group, no injection; intra-articular (IA) ropivacaine group, IA injection of ropivacaine alone; IA MDC group, IA injection of MDC; PA MDC group, PA injection of MDC; and IA + PA MDC group, IA and PA injections of MDC. The MDC consisted of ropivacaine, morphine, ketorolac, epinephrine, and cefuroxime.

Background: A new controlled-release formulation of aceclofenac 200 mg (Clanza CR®) developed by Korea United Pharm., Inc., South Korea, for once-daily (od) dosing provides biphasic aceclofenac release consisting of immediate release of 85 mg followed by sustained release of 115 mg.

Embryotoxicity assessment of developmental neurotoxicants using a neuronal endpoint in the embryonic stem cell test.

The embryonic stem cell test (EST) is a validated in vitro embryotoxicity test; however, as the inhibition of cardiac differentiation alone is used as a differentiation endpoint in the EST, it may not be a useful test to screen embryotoxic chemicals that affect the differentiation of noncardiac tissues. Previously, methylmercury (MeHg), cadmium and arsenic compounds, which are heavy metals that induce developmental neurotoxicity in vivo, were misclassified as nonembryotoxic with the EST. The aim of this study was to improve the EST to correctly screen such developmental neurotoxicants.

A phase I study to characterize the multiple-dose pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and safety of new enteric-coated triflusal formulations in healthy male volunteers.

Objectives: An enteric-coated formulation of triflusal (triflusal EC), an antiplatelet agent, was developed to reduce the high incidence of gastrointestinal adverse events (AEs). The aim of this study is to compare the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and safety of triflusal EC with triflusal in healthy Korean male subjects to determine bioequivalence and non-inferiority for the purposes of marketing approval.

Methods: A randomized, open-label, two-period, crossover study was conducted in 38 subjects.

Comparison of the tibiofemoral rotational alignment after mobile and fixed bearing total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: The anatomical landmark for the anteroposterior (AP) axis of the proximal tibia and its variability was investigated in order to determine whether a certain landmark could be employed as a reference axis for the proximal tibia after the rotating platform mobile bearing and fixed bearing total knee arthroplasties (TKAs).

Methods: Eighty primary osteoarthritic knees were randomized to undergo either rotating platform mobile bearing (Group A, n = 40) or fixed bearing (Group B, n = 40) TKAs, and were followed up for 31 and 30 months, respectively. The AP axes were defined for the distal femur, proximal tibia, ankle, and each TKA component on the reconstructed CT scan and the angles between the distal femoral AP axis and those of each bone or component were estimated.

Distraction arthrodesis with intramedullary nail and mixed bone grafting after failed infected total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the success rate of the distraction arthrodesis, which was attempted to maintain the limb length during arthrodesis using an intramedullary nail and mixed bone grafting, in terms of the eradication of infection, solid union, and functional outcome. The hypothesis was that distraction arthrodesis would be successful in union and elimination of infection with minimal limb shortening and a satisfactory functional outcome despite large bone defects.

Methods: Eight patients were managed by arthrodesis using a Huckstep intramedullary nail and massive corticocancellous bone chip grafts from autologous iliac bone and deep-frozen femoral head allografts were included in the study.

Effect of age on the pharmacokinetics of fimasartan (BR-A-657).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the pharmacokinetics (PK) and safety of fimasartan (BR-A-657), an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, between healthy young (19 - 45 years) and older (≥ 65 years) male subjects.

Methods: To assess the effect of age on PK and safety, fimasartan was administered as a single 240 mg tablet to 12 young and 10 older male subjects, followed by serial blood sampling over 48 h. Plasma concentrations of fimasartan were analyzed using validated HPLC-MS/MS.
