Background: Pyomyositis (PM) is a serious soft tissue infection and despite its clinical importance, previous studies have not been able to fully determine the clinical characteristics and microbial epidemiology of PM in Korea, which we therefore aimed to investigate.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively identified 140 adult patients diagnosed with PM from 13 general hospitals between January 2012 and December 2015. We analyzed the clinical and microbial characteristics of community-onset PM and compared them with community-acquired (CA) and healthcare-associated (HCA) PM.
Background: Although group B (GBS) colonization rate among pregnant Korean women is lower than that among women from many Western countries, recent data show an upward trend. We investigated recent epidemiological changes in GBS among pregnant Korean women in terms of colonization rate, antimicrobial susceptibility, serotype, and resistance genotype.
Methods: Vaginal and anorectal swab specimens from 379 pregnant Korean women were cultured on Strep B Carrot Broth with GBS Detect (Hardy Diagnostics, USA), selective Todd-Hewitt broth (Becton Dickinson, USA), and Granada agar plate medium (Becton Dickinson).
Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker cutoffs from immunoassays with low interlaboratory variability in diverse ethnic groups are necessary for their use in clinics and clinical trials. With lack of cutoffs from fully automated immunoassay platforms in diverse races, the aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical utility of CSF AD biomarkers from the Lumipulse fully automated immunoassay based on β-amyloid (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) status comparing with these from two manual immunoassays, in Koreans.
Methods: Among 331 Korean participants enrolled from a prospective, 3-year longitudinal observational study of the validation cohort of Korean Brain Aging Study for the Early Diagnosis and Prediction of AD, 139 (29 CN, 58 SCD, 29 MCI, and 23 AD) provided CSF and 271 underwent baseline amyloid PET (n = 128 with overlapping CSF and Aβ-PET, and 143 without CSFs).
Background: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is generally a safe procedure, but adverse events often occur. This highlights the necessity of the quality control of EGD. Complete visualization and photo documentation of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tracts are important measures in quality control of EGD.

Soluble αKlotho is known to regulate multiple ion channels and growth factor-mediated phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) signaling.

We detected SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8 T cells by MHC class I multimer staining and examined their phenotypes and functions in acute and convalescent COVID-19. Multimer cells exhibited early differentiated effector-memory phenotypes in the early convalescent phase.

Methods: Tumor tissues and peripheral blood were obtained from 65 patients with ovarian cancer.
Although telomere length (TL) is highly variable, a shorter TL indicate increased biological age. This multicenter study was conducted to identify the overall correlation between age and TL in Koreans and investigate the associations between age and TL in healthy individuals and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). TL was measured in peripheral leukocyte DNA.

Methods: Patients with recurrent and/or metastatic NSCLC treated with PD-1 inhibitors were enrolled (discovery cohort; n = 94). Peripheral blood was obtained immediately before and after one cycle of treatment with PD-1 blockade.
We propose a novel method, the epinephrine compression method (Epi-pledget), as a hemostasis method for ovarian cystectomy. A total of 179 patients undergoing laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy with stripping were randomly allocated into three groups: the bipolar coagulation group, the Epi-pledget group, and the coagulation after Epi-pledget (Epi & Coagulation) group. Serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels and antral follicle count (AFC) by ultrasonography were measured to determine the preservation of ovarian function.

Nascent chains utilize the crowded environment in favor of productive folding by direct physical connection with cellular macromolecules. The intermolecular repulsive forces by large excluded volume and surface charges of interacting cellular macromolecules, exerting 'social distancing' measure among folding intermediates, could play an important role in stabilizing their physically connected polypeptides against aggregation regardless of the physical connection types.

Calcium homeostasis modulator 1 (calhm1) proteins form an outwardly rectifying nonselective ion channel having exceedingly slow kinetics and low sensitivity to voltage that is shifted by lowering extracellular Ca ([Ca]). Here we found that physiological temperature dramatically facilitates the voltage-dependent activation of the calhm1 current (I); increased amplitude (Q, 7-15) and fastened speed of activation. Also, the leftward shift of the half-activation voltage (V) was similary observed in the normal and lower [Ca].

Core biomarkers amyloid-beta (Aβ) and Tau have been considered as key neuropathological hallmarks of AD. However, they did not sufficiently reflect clinical severity and therapeutic response, proving the difficulty of the Aβ- and Tau-targeting therapies in clinical trials.

Bioactive substances extracted from have been shown to ameliorate dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes in mice via multiple 5' AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated mechanisms; however, further studies are required to elucidate the anti-obesity effects of in vivo. In this study, we demonstrated that 3% extract powder (GEP) can be used to prevent obesity and insulin resistance in a mouse model.

Methods: Gingival tissue biopsies and saliva samples from 22 patients (12 with severe periodontitis and 10 with a healthy periodontium) were analyzed using transcriptomic microarray analysis. Differential gene expression was assessed, and pathway and clustering analyses were conducted for the samples.
Background: The aim of this study is to compare the prognostic impact of 2 precursor lesions of ampullary adenocarcinoma, intra-ampullary papillary-tubular neoplasm (IAPN) and flat dysplasia (FD).
Methods: From December 1994 to December 2012, a total of 359 patients underwent curative surgery for ampullary adenocarcinoma.
Results: The precursor lesions were IAPNs in 134 (37.
Macroautophagy/autophagy delivers cytoplasmic cargo to lysosomes for degradation. In yeast, the single Atg8 protein plays a role in the formation of autophagosomes whereas in mammalian cells there are five to seven paralogs, referred to as mammalian Atg8s (mAtg8s: GABARAP, GABARAPL1, GABARAPL2, LC3A, LC3B, LC3B2 and LC3C) with incompletely defined functions. Here we show that a subset of mAtg8s directly control lysosomal biogenesis.

Detection, diagnosis, and removal of colorectal neoplasms are well-accepted colorectal cancer prevention methods. Although promising endoscopic imaging techniques including narrow-band imaging have been developed, these techniques are operator-dependent and interpretations of the results may vary. To overcome these limitations, we applied deep learning to develop a computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) system of colorectal adenoma.

These systems have been based either on collections of batch reactors or on flow-chemistry designs, both of which require considerable engineering effort to set up and control. Here we develop an out-of-equilibrium system in which different reaction zones self-organize into a geometry that can dictate the progress of an entire process sequence.
